Hairy Maclary trail for Tauranga

A permanent bronze sculpture trail of Hairy Maclary and his gang through central Tauranga is approved by the Tauranga City Council.

The approval for the trail was given during the council's annual plan workshop on Thursday, much to the satisfaction of Creative Tauranga chief executive Tracey Rudduck-Gudsell.

Dame Lynley Dodd's literary creation is to turn to bronze in Tauranga.

'Public art has long been proven to contribute to identity and to generate extensive economic benefits to communities,” says Tracey.

'What better way to raise the profile of Tauranga within New Zealand and around the world than through the arts.

'The Hairy Maclary sculpture trail will attract national and international visitors to our city as a must-see attraction.

'Most importantly, it will honour the work of Dame Lynley Dodd now, and well into the future.”

Tourism Bay of Plenty general manager Tim Burgess agrees the project has the potential to become a huge drawcard for the city.

'Hairy Maclary and his buddies are instantly recognisable to children and parents around the world and the sculpture trail would be enjoyed by local residents and visitors alike,” says Tim.

'We're working closely with Creative Tauranga to help make this happen.”

Dame Lynley Dodd, a Tauranga resident for over 20 years, is one of New Zealand's best selling international authors and she too is excited by this project.

'I am astonished that my characters will be immortalised in bronze and I am thrilled at how well the concept is being received out in the community,” says Dame Lynley.

The next step in the project is a release for tenders. This is due to happen early next year.

PLAIN NUTS as usual

More financial lunacy the nutters think up these hairbrain schemes and a cash strapped TCC endorses and embraces ''the dog'' without any idea as to what it will finally cost. All this with ratepayers money yet again

Ratepayer cost

Poco will be pleased to know TCC ratepayers contribution is limited to making available public space. No financial contribution was allocated.

Great idea shame council couldn't contribute. One thing when the bronze figures are put in place you had better anchor them well as some mongrel will try and steal them.

Brains

If the council had any brains they would close the strand from the roundabout at the bottom of Devonport rd to the roundabout at the Grumpy Mole and make use of the spectacular waterfront we could have. Hairy MacLary and Scarface Claw and the rest of the bunch would be quite at home down there. Get rid of the bit of tar that caters for drivers too lazy to walk or just a cruising for perve and make the whole damn area an attraction. Stop these ridiculous meetings....what have we had, 8 years or more of them now? take some action people in council and just do it! Anywhere else in the world you dont see car parks enjoying the beautiful waterfront! Downtown is dying a lonely death and if you don't do something soon all the retailers will relocate to shopping centres that are managed by real people

Murray count to 10 and just think about it.What land & where is it. The recent examples we have of this are Mount Greens $12m land+money Cricket Pavilion land +$400k cash, Museum $15m land+money & Badminton reserve land plus$(?).Don't tell us Creative Tauranga is funding the bronzes itself because that's TCC anyway and COUNCIL always ends up contributing ratepayers funds

Where is it going???

Yatton Park - seems to have become the local dog park - so could be a great place to park some gorgeous canines with personality... or what about Memorial Park along the water front they could be heading for a splash down in the fountain - don't forget to add some little quirks as done with recent Humpty repaint - he has kiwis, ferns, kowhai and weta added if you're observant. Maybe these guys, could play in strawberry patches, dig by passionfruit poles or bathe in a tub at the side of the path - just make sure they take care near the train tracks. It would be awesome to make their prominant place to also be a place that the children who enjoy and appreciate these stories could have a lark with them too.

Youve been given the OK - now start the fundraising

Fantastic news that the council has given the go ahead for Hairy Maclary Sculptures, and even better news that they will not be contibuting to wards them. If all those who want sculptures were now to spend as much time fundraising as they do pleading for handouts the job would be finished by now

NOT WHAT THEY WANT

brilleaux : Sorry thats not on the advocates agenda they want handouts from everyone they can bludge off. The thought of possibly rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck in won't have crossed their minds.

council has destroyed Community spirit

No - it's a sorry state of affairs these days. In the old days before council decided they wanted to be everything to everybody, community spirited organisations like Rotary and Lions would have been onto something like this like a dog on the Christmas Ham bone, but council do-gooders have destroyed the strength of such organisations to a fraction of their former selves (no disrespect at all to those fantastic organisations of course)

AGONISED DEATH OF A CITY

TMC ... I agree that the car parks have prime location and view at the waterfront. But to spend $30m on a waterfront redevelopment is a complete joke, except for ratepayers of course who will have to pay ever more rates to try and pay the interest on the mushrooming debt. OH YES WHAT DO MUSHRROMS AND RATEPAYERS HAVE IN COMMON ?

COMMUNITY SPIRIT FOUND

Brilleaux, the community spirit is where it has always been, in the Councillor's lounge, consumed at will and often all at ratepayers expense.

WOMBLE HEAVEN

I thought Council were redeveloping the Strand for Wombles not Hairy Maclary. Perhaps they are the same thing, if not then they will all get whacked in a couple of years to make way for wombles.

BAD JELLY & DELHI BELLY

Everything TCC touch turns to custard so don't think the Waterfront will be any different with CORONATION PIER its tarted up barges etc. Once the maritime consultants have had a little play with monopoly money at TCC ratepayers cost, trust me 'bro' it will give you the 'screamers'

DONT TELL ME ABOUT THE WATER FRONT

Posted on 29-12-2010 18:45 | By The Master

Bet the Council will spend up on the waterfront, then the foreshore just fabricated will be claimed by the "locals" and then all will be lost to all, then only if you pay can you go. So as a ratepayer you borrow and pay for life and eternity ... then have to pay to be allowed in anyway, talk about double dipping again.

HAIRY FAIRY QUITE CONTRARY

Posted on 31-12-2010 12:26 | By The Master

The next cunning plan of Council will be to bring back the Kestrel and park it up there, claiming it is "wonderful", "historic" and well something else I am sure, it is just hard to see any common sense to it all.
