Election spending claims posted on the Tauranga City Council website are providing ‘food for thought' for campaign managers with some low spenders proving successful.
Tauranga City Councillor Murray Guy gained re-election on a budget of $350.
Spending by candidates ranged from $21,941 by unsuccessful candidate David Love, to ‘nil' by unsuccessful mayoral candidate Hori Leaming.
But the candidate with the most efficient campaign is councillor Murray Guy, who returned himself to council and was the second best polling mayoral candidate at a cost of $350. Mayor Stuart Crosby spent $12,444.88 on keeping his job.
'We don't have the resources, but also from a philosophical point of view, I've got some disquiet about sitting members like me have a distinct advantage over non-sitting candidates,” says Murray.
'Our mere presence in the community gives us a significant edge, it's huge.
'I relied on the community's knowledge of the work that I had undertaken for the previous three years.
'A new candidate can't do that, so they are severely disadvantaged – unless you are a rugby player or something, unless you have got a profile.
'It will be interesting to see what everybody did spend. Some of them spent a lot of money, huge.”
Candidates are required to file a return of election expenses within 55 days of the election.
New councillors Tony Christiansen, Terry Molloy and Larry Baldock have comparatively modest election expenses. Tony spent $2825.10, Terry $4883.99, Larry just over $3000.
The two former councillors who lost their seats spent a little more.
Hayden Evans spent nearly $7000, Mike Baker claims $7,783.33.
Wayne Moultrie spent $11,051.77 keeping his job in the Mount ward. Deputy Mayor David Stewart spent $10,783.45 on his campaign and Rick Curach $11,687.82.

Big Dollars do count ...

I chose to let voters make their choices by my actual record / history, rather than my opinion of myself in a brochure, an advertisement. Reality is, few voters take much interest in day to day local government news and affairs, and Councillors voting and statements records are rarely reported by the daily media. The Mayor, by nature of the role, receives constant media, community and council publication exposure. An existing office holder, be it Councillor or Mayor, has a huge advantage and as the results clearly demonstrate, huge dollars are required to capture the large percentage of voters who are open to be swayed by pre-election self promotion.
What a sad state

"...huge dollars are required to capture the large percentage of voters who are open to be swayed by pre-election self promotion." Nothing is as effective as a golly-good circus for the intellectually challenged herd. It would be worse if sheeple were forced to vote. You'd just go around like Santa. (NB: luckily we have people like Guy maintaining Common Sense at the TCC)

Interesting that less than adequate councilors spend so much money to keep their jobs which they hardly seem capable of doing, of course they rape us financially to get all back well within the term they sit for. I wonder why they spend so much money when people are so stupid they vote them in time and time again no matter how inadequate they are. The only successfully activity that I can see is the superb way with so little effort they managed to double the cities debts. I wonder will they try as hard to double for the next election so we can vote them in again and eventually become the first city in NZ to declare bankruptcy or be put into receivership. Alastair
Not all about the dollars

Yes big $$ spent were by some, namely David Love and Steve Morris. Fair enough that's their choice. In contrast though I only spent $1,312 & yet I still received 7,093 votes (only 1,242 votes less than Mr Love), which goes to show it's not all about the money - thank goodness. Strong community connections are the key.
SELF PROMOTION ABOUNDS

There seems to be a direct link between how much is spent and spin-doctoring. If the "intellectually challenged herds" of this world (in some places also referred to as "Turkey's) actually had 1/2 a clue of what went on at Council on a daily basis then all the kings men and all the kings horses could not put hump-dee-dump-dee back together again for another three slug out over the ratepayers pie ....
The Idiot Vote

Money if spent properly and in sufficient quantities will get you voted on to Councils.Once there you have name recognition. The other route to power is simply be someone who has some claim to fame whether or not that is justified is another matter- you could be away with the fairies and those voters who were a sandwich short of a picnic would still give you their votes.
