Burn off in Wentworth Valley today

Matariki Forest are burning a large log skid site high up in the ranges in the Wentworth Valley near Whangamata area today.

Smoke from the fire will likely be seen from both sides of the range and from some areas of the Hauraki Plains.

The forestry company says today's burn off is to clear waste from the site and is done to reduce the risk of a fire hazard.

Matariki Forests is the third largest forestry company in New Zealand with approximately 130,000 hectares of plantations across the country.

It is managed by Rayonier New Zealand, a subsidiary of Rayonier Inc. who manage forest assets worth in excess of $700 million.
