Possible changes to a proposed cycleway from Omokoroa to Tauranga have the potential to sway Tauranga City Council into supporting the development of the cycle trail.
Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby, in a Long Term Plan media briefing, outlined how a new route has the potential to reduce costs and allow the option of linking into a walkway planned to be built to Miles Lane, along the Tauranga side of the Wairoa River.

The new option follows strong community support for council to reverse its decision not to fund a $500,000 share of the Tauranga leg of the cycleway.
The decision sparked a number of critical submissions in council's recent Long Term Plan hearings, while Tauranga Roundtable members presented council with $100,000 aimed at provoking a U-turn on the decision.
Back in February, council voted six-to-four against providing the $500,000 on the grounds that the government should be paying for the national trail, with council money being spent on cycle trails within the city.
The city section of the trail is from the Wairoa River to Ngatai Road, near Otumoetai Road, where it will connect up with the city cycle network.
It is believed the Tauranga Energy Consumers Trust will pay for the bridge across the Wairoa River.
Stuart says instead of the cycleway bridging the Wairoa River close to the railway bridge and following the railway to Ngatai Road, the new proposal is to cross the river at Waimarino.
The cycleway would then traverse Parau Farms, behind Taniwha Lane, and link directly into Bethlehem.
He says most of the esplanade land for the riverside trail option had been acquired.
A full report on the route change will be handed to councillors during next week's LTP deliberations, which will consider some 654 submissions and petitions.
The deliberations are the next step before the LTP is finalised on June 30.

What a surprise

that the spineless local government is on a parallel the the national government with the trendy about turn mentality . Talk of the Americas cup has spilled over to these mindless windblown decision makers with more about turns than a sail boat race . Tempted to say what next but not that confident as nothing surprises anymore. Ask council to address a council tree and they send me an account for $400 plus for removal. Make your cycle ways the same as route K or the TEL as that is a fairer way . Sensible people would refer to it as user payes as is the standing procedure with the listed . $500,000 is a huge amount of money in anyones budget and for approximately at best 2% of rate payers . Yet another minority decision like the national flag ! Fed up !.

I so hope this cycleway goes ahead. My partner and I are avid cyclists and this would be a wonderful asset. Imagine cycling out to Omokoroa on a day like today, having a drink and coming back. I know this cycleway would be well patronized.
Good

Cyclists are fair game to bad drivers on the road. More trails that connect without taking a risk on the road is good for all concerned. Less bike casualties, accidents and better health are a plus for the country and the region.
keep them off the road

I hope more cycleways are built to keep the number of cyclist on statehighways to a minimum.
Just extend the path to bridge

rather this be spent on upgrading Papamoa beach road with removal of poles and concrete 3m wide cycleway
More council funded fishing trips NOW!!!

It would keep me off the road and away from all of these "I WANT IT" cyclists. If I were to go door to door and TELL householders that they HAD to give me money to fund my leisure activities, what do you imagine their response would be? The same as mine...... STUFF OFF!!! And pay for your own activities. If council owned land can be used constructively all well and good, let council LOAN the land to your group and YOU BUILD THE WALKWAY TO COUNCIL SPECS. Do the same as schools have to and run a few sausage sizzles or sell boards on the walkway.
