Green light for cycleway

Tauranga's cycling community have been handed a boost after Tauranga City Council reversed their funding decision for the Tauranga Moana Cycle Trail.

This morning's deliberations saw councillors vote unanimously to allocate $400,000 towards the Omokoroa to Tauranga route.

The city section of the trail will run from the Wairoa River to Ngatai Road, near Otumoetai Road, where it will connect up with the city cycle network.

The change of heart follows months of community pressure, including a 800-strong community cycle rally, and Tauranga Roundtable members presenting council with $100,000 aimed at provoking a U-turn on the decision.

Council had earlier declined to fund their section from Matua to the Wairoa River, while Western Bay of Plenty District Council – the lead agency on the project – committed to paying $300,000 a year in its draft ten-year plan.

A revised route was explored with the potential to reduce costs and allow the option of linking into a walkway planned to Miles Lane, along the Tauranga side of the Wairoa River.

Instead of the cycleway bridging the Wairoa River close to the railway bridge and following the railway to Ngatai Road, it will cross the river at Waimarino.

The cycleway would then traverse Parau Farms, behind Taniwha Lane, and link directly into Bethlehem.

Of the 103 submissions received by council during the Long Term Plan process, on the Omokoroa to Tauranga Cycle Trial, 93 opposed council's decision to decline its share of the funding.

The remaining 10, supportive of council, claimed the funding was for niche groups and could be achieved without council assistance.

Council also approved to allocate $40,000 to investigate the Waimapu Pathway and $30,000 to investigate a new walkway/cycleway from Memorial Park to the Strand

Shame!!!

Another capitulation to a minority group. Our biggest shame is that the MAJORITY can't be bothered to speak-up against the special interest groups. The end result is as above.... ridiculous numbers of supporters and minimal numbers putting their heads above the parapets to speak against. Take the names and addresses of the supporters and send THEM the maintenance bills, because you can guarantee that they wont be doing anything but moaning about the poor state of the surface and state of the cycle track into the future.

So yet again the squeaky wheel wins over ratepayers concerns

Good decision councillors!

how come a minority who enjoy dressing up in "Fluro Lycra", and getting saddle sores all in the name of exercise, can get their passion funded?, when I have to pay a substantial membership fee to get mine?, why do they think they are so bloody special?!!!!!!, if they want it they should be funding it by way of a user toll, why should ratepayers be burdened with more cost at the expense of ...... I don't know maybe a stormwater system.

Fantastic

Now let's fine those who still cycle on the road instead of using a cycleway when available, and it will have paid for itself in no time

Great Stuff

What else can I say, Great Stuff.

Why via Bethlehem ???

Good move, if belated, by TCC, to fund this, but whose idea was it to dog-leg the route inland rather than along the coast to Ngatai Rd ?? Whether for commuting or recreation, cyclists are unlikely to want to wend their way up the river then face an uphill grunt to end up in a suburban shopping centre. Follow the rail line - it is flat, safe and scenic. Get people off SH2 and off the streets in general. Think again TCC.

Absolutely fabulous. Mountain biking is a growing sport and past time.

Idiotic Backflipping@Ratepayers cost

At the outset TCCCouncil quite rightly unanimously resolved not to fund this crazy cycle pipe dream then begin to weaken in face of the peddling pillocks push push and when the Roundtable roosters come up with the $100k carrot TCC folds up like a pack of cards. What a group of spineless wonders- just for once why didn't you stick to your principles, gut feelings and fiscal common sense. You have been shafted yet again by the special interest elitist bozos.

Guess what!

Nine responses and already one complaint about this ridiculous waste of space.

Are all you moaners also commenting on the fact that the Council are funding a replacement running track at the Domain. This isn't just for local cyclists, but a Community asset to be shared by the Countries people & tourists. People moan that their sport isn't funded by Council. Just be careful before you say that, as the fields, stadiums & pools you use are probably owned by Council. AWESOME stuff Council

Without attacking the messenger, let me attack your message. Every dollar is made up of 100 cents, if you save or don't spend five of those cents every now and again you can save a dollar (Simple enough so far?) There is the same deal with a billion dollar debt. If we STOP $400,000 dollar expenditure we save EVERYONE some of their ever increasing rates DEMANDS. Would you want Len Brown to manage our council?

I used to use the walkways but not since they became cycleways its to dangerous.Interesting thing when the Waikareao walkway was first opened there were signs banning cyclists and all dogs had to be on a leash. The signs were continually vandalized and pulled out that the council gave up.Seems like the squeaky wheel has won again.

Agree on that, that concept applies across the board to, right does not always end up as being helped, but all the BS merchants seem to tell a heap of porky's get the money and run. Worst they come back of more and succeed.
