Art advisory group appointed

Tauranga City Council's Community Development Committee has appointed five people to its new Public Art Advisory Group.

The group will assess all significant public art proposals against the Public Art Policy adopted on April 29, and provide recommendations to council.

The three arts representatives are Stufkens and Chambers Architects founding director Steven Chambers, The Incubator director and co-founder Simone Anderson and Art and Body Gallery director Julie Paama-Pengelly.

The youth representative is Lauren McClutchie from Otumoetai College.

Tauranga Chamber of Commerce board member Murray Clode has been appointed as the community representative.

The tangata whenua representative is Ngai Tamarawaho kaumatua Peri Kohu, who was nominated by the Tangata Whenua Collective.

Up to three council staff, including the City Project Analyst, will also be part of the group and will rotate depending on the site of a public art proposal.

Mayor Stuart Crosby says he's looking forward to working with the members to create a vibrant and engaging city, and to help shape the identity of Tauranga through public art.

He says: 'Public art will contribute to the council's community outcomes of being ‘a city of great spaces, places and environments, and a city with heart and soul'.

'The Public Art Advisory Group will help ensure that significant public art approved by council meets the requirements of the Public Art Policy and contributes to these community outcomes.”

The aim of the Public Art Policy is to encourage public art that enhances the city's environment and contributes to the character and identity of Tauranga.

The group is not responsible for commissioning public art.

It provides a clear process for artists to apply and develop or donate public arts to council for the enjoyment of the community.

Some 18 applications were received for the three art, one youth and one community positions, which are for a three-year term.

Corporate Planner Melony Atkins said the standard of applications was very high, with a number of well-qualified and experienced arts practitioners applying for the three arts positions.

So now all and sundry are on the TCC payroll again, who only knows what tis lot will end up costing ratepayers, it will be a lot, and will hurt all in the pocket yet again.

A city with um, er, ah, soul

I feel a bit sorry for this new group as no doubt they are art enthusiasts. I believe what they will soon realise is that true art can't be slotted into any sort of policy created by a council. I note the group will have to assess art based on its excellence, innovation and quality. As art is in the eye of the beholder, good luck with that. Creating a city with soul can't be done by committee.

It is impossible to slot any sort of art into any councils policy - unless it is the intention to dictate to ratepayers what art they can or cannot see. This Art Advisory Group has one hell of a job on it's hands and if they lean the wrong way will be ripped apart by the public and the art afficionadoes. Good luck to them.

At what cost!!

My understanding is

that there is no remuneration for members of this fluffy group, bar for the fact that our rates pay TCC staff, and of course the 'up to three' council staff will be in council employ whilst attending tete a tetes, unless of course they will be held outside working hours.. Just please don't tell me what is art, and what I will enjoy.

WHAT I WANT TO KNOW

Committees mean more bureaucrats running about the place on the committee, before the committee after the committee and because of the committee. That will be the result as the fluffy ducks mob go about things is an ratz artz manner from the get go.

More consultants

How are these people qualified to do this and how much is it going to cost? I am surprised and amazed you don't have Priority One and Tourism BOP in there too. They profess to know all that is best for the region and are already on the gravy train.
