Roadworks around centre start Monday

Work on the roads around the Thames Civic Centre will begin on Monday as the upgrade of the centre continues.

The project will also see the Thames i-SITE and regional tourism marketing organisation Destination Coromandel relocate to the new Civic Centre offices by August 1.

The first of the changes to the roads will start with the relocation of the pedestrian crossing across the state highway.

The Thames-Coromandel District Council says the new crossing will be constructed first, and when complete, the existing crossing will be removed.

'The new pedestrian crossing will be closer to the children's playground and slightly wider,” says the council, 'enabling better disabled access and making it easier to navigate for those with mobility challenges.”

Work will then move into the service lane where we will remove a section of concrete block wall to provide more room for busses to enter the service lane at Queen St.

Council may have to temporarily close the Queen St entrance to the service lane while it completes the work.

'The service lane work will then move to the Mary St entrance to make a new crossing area and bus parking area.

'It will finish with new road markings and signage installed in time for the August 1 opening of the relocated i-SITE.”

Other changes also taking place include the service lane behind the Civic Centre becoming one-way, the service lane exit onto Mary St toward the roundabout becoming a left-turn only, and a change to parking allocations and times.

The AA Driver and Vehicle Licensing will also relocate to the Thames-Coromandel District Council's district office at 515 Mackay Street, Thames from July 1.
