Heavily trimmed, likely to grow

Tauranga's iconic tree, Aspen, or cottonwood, is 20 tonnes lighter after arborists finished with it today.

The drastic pruning was forced by the tree itself dropping a main limb weighing several tonnes onto McLean Street on Monday, narrowly missing parked vehicles.

Checks of the state of the tree saw Arbour Care immediately lop the limbs overshadowing neighbouring businesses before wet weather forced a pause.

They returned today to top the estimated 150 year old tree, taking about 16m off the top.

The tree will recover, says Hayden Rowlands from Arbour Care.

'It will probably sit for a little while, but within a year you should start to see some growth back in there.”

The wood, which is quite soft, will become firewood – apart from the big log that has been claimed by one of the Lions Clubs.

TRIMMING INDEED

You will note that all the lower ones have been chopped out but the top remains, all be it a little lower etc. That is the problem at Council, if the officals at the top of the pile chopped a few limbs off then they would have that "sinking" feeling and some. The rest of us "mere morals" would of course be better off for it.
