More branches are being cut off Tauranga's historic ‘Aspen', black cottonwood tree today for safety reasons.
Tauranga City Council announced its decision to continue cutting this morning after the tree was inspected on Thursday by consultant arborist Paul Kenny.
More cuts are made.
The historic tree was drastically pruned after it dropped an eight tonne branch onto McLean Street on January 17.
The hole left by the fallen branch clearly shows the interior of the 150 year old tree is rotten.

Internal rot is the cause of last week's branch fall.
Council staff and contractors are able to prune 20 tonnes of wood from the tree for safety reasons. Because it is an historic registered tree, a decision to fell it requires a consent, and a decision by the city councillors.
