Feedback wanted on concept plan

The Thames-Coromandel District Council is seeking public feedback on a draft redevelopment plan for Williamson Park in Whangamata.

The park is due for improvements to replace many of the old pines that are at the end of their lifespan, as well as creating more room for the significant events the park now hosts.

Council says Williamson Park is experiencing a significant increase in visitor numbers and events which helps fuel the local economy but does put pressure on the park in its current state.

'A risk assessment recently undertaken by a qualified arborist triggered the decision to take action at the park to make it safer,” says council, 'the opportunity was also taken at the same time to plan for the future.”

Consultation first began in April of this year with nearby residents and the key users of the park – The Whangamata Surf Lifesaving Club, Blackies, Whangamata Summer Festival, Beach Hop and Brits at the Beach.

The concept plan includes removing up to 100 of the old pine trees, planting native coastal trees throughout the park, building a new boardwalk along the dunes in front of the Surf Club area and building three large shade structures while new trees grow.

It also recommends realigning the road to create more open space, redesigning carparking for ease and safety, opening up new pedestrian areas and improving access to the beach, plus installing new lights for added security.

Council says the public can view and offer feedback on the concept plan by visiting its Whangamata office where it will be on display until Friday, November 6.

'The concept plan will also be on display at Blackies cafe in Williamson Park on Saturday, October 24 (Labour Weekend) between 9am-12pm."

All suggestions and comments will be considered by the project team and a final concept design will be presented to the Whangamata Community Board for approval to proceed to construction.

'If all goes to plan, construction will begin in April 2016 with the removal of the pine trees,” adds council. 'Following that, earthworks will begin in and around the park to contour and realign the road and prepare the park for its new life.”

The final day for all public submissions will be Friday, November 6.
