Creative Tauranga on the move

Creative Tauranga will enjoy a change of scenery next month, with the charitable trust moving to new premises.

Currently based on the corner of Wharf Street and Willow Street in the city centre, acting general manager Jennifer Pearson says the organisation will move into the Tauranga City Council arcade by mid-November.

'Our lease was due to expire in January and the landlord needs to re-strengthen the building,” explains Jennifer, 'so they have allowed us to move out earlier and we have been able to secure this space with council.

'The new location will enable us to continue to strengthen the Western Bay of Plenty's thriving creative sector, develop a new community gallery and also use the arcade space for arts activities.”

The space which Creative Tauranga will be moving into is currently in use by the Maori wardens and community policing, who will be re-housed in another part of the council's buildings.

A pop-up exhibition is planned for this space in December and the new gallery will open officially at the end of January of next year.

Following the resignation of former chief executive officer Tracey Rudduck-Gudsell in September, Jennifer was appointed acting general manager to help guide Creative Tauranga through the move and an upcoming strategic review.

Creative Tauranga Trust acting chair Marcus Wilkins says they will look to appoint a new general manager in the New Year upon completion of the 360 review and 'the direction for the organisation is clear”.

'Jennifer has worked with Creative Tauranga over the Hairy Maclary project, so has a good knowledge of how the organisation works.”

How come it competes with private galleries

Any private art shop (any that are left that is) should be outraged that Creative Tauranga holds exhibitions on ratepayer subsidised premises. That's simply not fair. And if the WBOP's creative sector truly is thriving, is Creative Tauranga needed? Should it be funded by the thriving artists, instead of ratepayers?

charitable trust????

I see no lack of funds. Obviously the wealthy patrons of "The Arts" enjoy the feel-good factor of funding this non-profit organisation? I would have thought that a "charitable trust" would have felt more at home with many other charitable trusts in the historic village, but I guess that would make it "look" like a charity and less worthwhile funding. It is after all "The Arts"!

Sadly fair has nothing to do with it, it is all about "I want" and no thought goes into who pays and do they want to. I would think that there is more merit in a referendum here than a flag
