No success in 11th hour plea

The promoter of the Global Breakthrough Festival scheduled for February 19 is offering to work for the Tauranga City Council for free for a year in return for their support of the event.

Promoter Jamie Joseph made the appeal to 'try and take the pressure off” organising the festival at Baypark.

Jamie Joseph's last minute attempt for council support for the Global Breakthrough Festival has come to no avail.

She originally applied for funding, but in reply to a question from Wayne Moultrie at today's council strategy and policy committee meeting, she says she deleted a request for $21,000.

The Global Breakthrough Festival had $60,000 in funding pulled in December 2010 by TECT.

Jamie says she's continued with plans to hold the festival, which she told the meeting has sold about 2500 tickets and needs to sell 5000 to break even.

In return for council support, Jamie offered to forgo a 2012 festival and instead concentrate on developing web-based marketing with the council and community groups.

In reply to questions, Jamie says she was too late to apply for council support at the 2010 events funding committee meeting.

Councillors asked if she could understand how community groups who had applied at the meeting might be upset if council did support her.

Disappointing

While I understand that council have to honour the processes in place for giving funding, I bet it is very rare that such a driven, focussed individual like Jamie presents herself and offers her immense talent to the council, to Tauranga. I think she is a treasure and someone council could fully use to their benefit - with a finger-on-the-pulse savvy many of our elected members lack. We're lucky to have her as a local! I'll be at the Global Breakthrough festival (facepainting) and invite everyone reading to join me and the thousands others who will converge on Baypark for a great time on the wkend of Feb 19th. It's our festival - own it and support it by getting your ticket!

Congratulation

For walking away. The best decission TCC has made in a while .

Lillybeth while I understand

your frustrations I can not support them. I agree with Tony ~ a good decision by TCC. In fact the only thing they could do in the current climate. As a suggestion maybe Jamie could take some time to clearly understand/learn how she could do it better next time.It would appear that she may well need to put more into adequate planning. I am starting to feel that "all" events in the community should be self funding. Is it a local authorities place to fund or assist to fund these events with ratepayers money? If private enterprise is not doing them maybe that's because they lose money? (Supporting in kind may well be acceptable). I would also add that there is quite a lot of community funding available via a number of organisations."Citizens Monitoring Council"

I didn't voice any frustrations. I am scared we'll one day lose her talent in Tauranga.

Talent? That's a matter of opinion. Not mine, I'm afraid.

Talent?

Posted on 09-02-2011 13:25 | By Needles

Like many promoters, she seems to have a talent for getting the people she needs 'onside' and playing them against those 'offside', and she is a dab hand at the self-inflatory press release (the usual mix of fiction and wishful thinking that PR's are renowned for) but isn't it all just more smoke and mirrors? Get on with the job, by all means, but spare the manufactured drama please

TALENT....YES!!!

This women has drive and ambition...she has the right vision of Tauranga and the talents in which we have as locals. The Council would be wise to take her offer of a years free service and help her to create a festival for all families to enjoy....we are able to have a Jazz Festival....why not this??? This Festival could showcase musical talent for a younger crowd at an affordable price. I think its a shame and I commend you Jamie for your efforts and encourage you to fight the good fight for as long as it takes. I am Coming!!!!

TROUGHING OUT

Posted on 10-02-2011 10:47 | By Ratcatcher

TCC should never be underwriting sponsoring or running any event because it is incapable of doing so without costing TCC ratepayers a bloody fortune. Strange nobody ever seems to bother to get the full story till the financials hit the fan .Interestingly the recent world rowing champs at Karapiro lost up to $3m.The morass of incomplete and creative business cases and the continual feeding off idiot magnet TECT with TCC blessing and encouragement has to stop sometime soon surely. Many of the freelunchers are not even community charities.

As much as I love concerts/festivals I'm quite happy my rates are not being used to bail out a private venture-these funds should not be seen as a handy trough by people on either side. And come on, Jamie, offering to work for 'free'...oh, in exchange for money: that'd make it - in more direct words - asking to be paid well in advance.

SHES ON THE WRONG TRACK

Not work for them, she needs to hand it over then so 10 or 20 more council staff can be employed to run what 1-2 others from the real world would do in a day.

What do people actually think a cash injection is? Council throws around these million dollar figures all the time, maybe people think we went in there asking for 6 figures? That's not at all the case. We were happy with support in kind; a bit of waste management, some speakers and lighting and plug in the Bay News City Views. Products and services owned by Council. Basic stuff. Money, product in kind, it makes no difference to us. Also what rate payers need to understand is that festivals are a huge tourism and economic growth opportunity. I presented the stats and the facts. Council was not my first stop and it's not my final stop. Almost every day new sponsorship comes in for the festival. It is my responsibility to chase money and raise funds right up to the very end. I never expected Council to help us very much, only a little bit, like they do other community groups. But what we got was nothing. In fact, we got less than nothing because certain members of the Council were just rude and indifferent to the point that Council workers are actually encouraging people not to buy tickets. Tall poppy syndrome is rife. And I offered up one year of free service not for the love of Council, but for the community, because it's the community that stepped up and kept this festival alive. But we're ok with the outcome. The pressure is on just a little bit more, but the victory is sweeter. Just a few more days to go…maybe it's time to just let the event speak for itself. latest updates on www.lovethemount.co.nz

Get your Facts Straight...

I appreciate peoples opinion on this subject, I do NOT however appreciate Andrew Campbel's drama filled fact choosing from the council meeting. Looks like someone's trying to keep up appearances. Jamie has been working the right way from the day the festival began. Councils "funding deadlines/etc" are a as much of a myth as a reporters integrity. After recently reading the article "Wave of Change" I quote ... Tauranga Chamber of Commerce chief executive Max Mason "There's a wave of change and we either choose to surf the wave and retain a degree of control, or we can be overcome by it." "Mayor Stuart Crosby says he'll do his best to see Tauranga City does not become "over-manufactured"." and then goes on to say ... "I'd hate to see the city over-manufactured. I think we need to let it evolve on its own and form its own identity. We are, to a degree, still struggling to find our sense of identity and a lot of that can relate to rapid growth." Art music and culture ARE our identity... and it's right here in front of you Mr Crosby :) The chief executive of economic development agency Priority One, Andrew Coker - "I think we will also catch up in arts and culture ... it will be a sophisticated city that highly paid people seek." ASK chairman of SmartGrowth Bill Wasley "There is limited funding available so it's about being creative. It's about building a community, not just the physical aspect." And there is no better way to be creative and build a community then with music and art and culture... it does not take a rocket scientist to figure this out, just go to any assembly at any local primary school and you will find the building blocks... our children's art work, singing and stories. I suggest we start with some form of funding and legislation available to a committee of people who will do the right thing buy it. Many of us have already planted the seed and it is growing well, we just need some help in preventing the slugs and snails from destroying what we are growing. The council and the city are sure to benefit. Just take a look at the Jazz festival... but we don't all dig Jazz now do we!!

Yes, Jamie

Yes, let it speak for itself for god's sake and stop bleating about council here and on your website. To create an 'us and them' situation like you've done is to create a vast red herring as far as liability and credit goes. I bet if you'd been turned down by another sponsor - coca cola for example? - you wouldn't be bagging them in the run-up to the gig. But because of your failed last minute begging bowl effort to council, *they* get villified-and for what? Because you think it is your right to demand, and their responsibility to supply, whatever you need because you say 'it is so'? Come on, this detracts from a potentially great private venture/event and does you no favours as far as your image as a promoter. As for Annette's comment about the jazzfest, it was built up during over 45 years of largely VOLUNTEER work - ie not-for-profit: earn your stripes, anyone?

@DRich: I could not have put it better - BRAVO and well said. Council should not be in the entertainment business FULL STOP, apart from not putting hurdles in the way of private entertainment people who wish to put these events on. The Tga Jazz fest as DRich also states was built over 45 years FREE OF CHARGE AND COMPULSION by music lovers. Nobody was forced to pay for it. If this concert is such a good idea why do you wish to FORCE ratepayers to fund it? The Marchwood festival was a great success this year and is also building (just like the jazz fest) free of compulsion - funded by music lovers - not council. Why is this concert so SPECIAL? Perhaps you should try and promote a concert within your budget! If you sold 2500 tickets. More unprincipled, state/council tit sucking at its worst, as this peprpetrator has NO IDEA how what she is doing is so WRONG. Its time to wean yourselves off government / council dependancy and stand on your own 2 feet people. Its time to learn and realise this is NOT acceptable behaviour and let people like this know it is wrong and immorral. This young lady is definitely the product of a government-run school system. Be prepared for More of this kind of behaviour in the future

No principles

What do people actually think a cash injection is? Council throws around these million dollar figures all the time, maybe people think we went in there asking for 6 figures? Do YOU realise what a cash injection is? Just because council do it all the time doesnt make it right you know! Find yourself a PRIVATE sponsor - one who donates the money free of compulsion. Somebody who earnt the money themselves (ie didnt have to steal it by force from other people). That's not at all the case. We were happy with support in kind; a bit of waste management, some speakers and lighting and plug in the Bay News City Views. The council should not be in the entertainment business anyway. That is a job for . . . er! . . . people in the entertainment business. Unfortunately the council does own a big expensive PA system. That means the RATEPAYERS own this system. That means YOU have shares in it if you are a ratepayer, so in a roundabout way I guess you SHOULD have the opportunity to use it (unfortunately.). Council should at least be prepared to make the streets available - waste management etc though. It should be in their interest that YOU put this event on (at your expense and risk) Also what rate payers need to understand is that festivals are a huge tourism and economic growth opportunity. What YOU need to understand is that you have no right to FORCE other people to pay for a concert because YOU think its for their OWN GOOD. I presented the stats and the facts. Council was not my first stop and it's not my final stop. Do yourself and the ratepayers a favour next time and skip the council. Almost every day new sponsorship comes in for the festival. FANTASTIC I never expected Council to help us very much, only a little bit, like they do other community groups. But what we got was nothing. In fact, we got less than nothing because certain members of the Council were just rude and indifferent to the point that Council workers are actually encouraging people not to buy tickets. COUNCILLORS are UNPRINCIPLED PEOPLE - much like yourself. What do you expect? They make random decisions based upon personal feelings and not upon a set of uncompromisable principles. They are all there because they want to do whats best for the community (based upon their own feelings and ideas) and they dont care whose rights are destroyed to get what they want. Tall poppy syndrome is rife. And I offered up one year of free service not for the love of Council, but for the community, because it's the community that stepped up and kept this festival alive. Ask yourself "what is community?" It is a group of individuals. It is INDIVIDUALS who kept this alive, not some MAKE BELIEVE entity called community. It is also INDIVIDUALS who you wish to FORCE to pay for your concert

Well done on a fantastic Festival!

Wow, I have only just stumbled across this article and I have to say there seems to be a lot of sour grapes. My wife and I and our two litle ones went to the Global Breakthrough Festival on 19 Feb at Baypark and it was a beautiful, unforgettable day. I've never seen anything like it before in our City. Finally something special for the young people and young families. As a rate payer I would have had no problem supporting it. It's not like they asked for much anyway. Congratulations Global Breakthrough! Fingers x for 2012. JZ Carmichael.
