Council to speak on liquor reform

Banning 18 year olds from buying alcohol in bottle shops and supermarkets, and imposing a ‘one way' policy in city bars are among changes the Tauranga City Council wants to see in liquor laws.

Tauranga City Council submissions on the Alcohol Reform Bill also propose removing licence holders' right of appeal to the Liquor Licensing Authority, and support a relaxing of sale of liquor prohibition on Anzac Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Christmas Day.

Mayor Stuart Crosby wants the Tauranga City Council to present in person its submissions on the Alcohol Reform Bill.

The council also supports the Bill's proposal for Local Alcohol Policies, which allow the council to continue to impose local trading hours, for example closing Mount Maunganui bars at 1am and closing Tauranga bars at 3am instead of 4am.

The end of shift for Tauranga police working on The Strand is also 3am, says Tauranga City Councillor Larry Baldock.

'Very few get to go home at 3am when their shifts finish,” says Larry.

'They are still picking up the mess that comes out of the bars.”

‘One way doors' refers to preventing people entering bars either after midnight or an hour or two before closing. The intention is to prevent late night drinkers bar hopping and contributing to The Strand's perceived problem with drinkers.

Mayor Stuart Crosby says the Alcohol Reform Bill is similar to the gambling policy in that the costs of it will fall on ratepayers.

Associated amendments to the Local Government Act will mean ratepayers will have to pay for the bylaws made if the Bill is passed into law.

Under the proposed local alcohol policy, the council will have to pay to assess the number of licenses, residents' socio-economic status, the demography of holidaymakers, the health of residents and the nature and severity of alcohol related problems in the district.

'That's where the costs will lie,” says Stuart, who is recommending the council appear before the select committee to make its submissions.

RATEPAYERS SHAFTED AGAIN

Yes for once TCC are on the right track but don't hold your breath just yet.Why on earth would TCC support relaxing rules on the sale of liquor on ANZAC DAY, GOOD FRIDAY, EASTER SUNDAY & XMAS DAY .What is the reason for this nonsense it looks like just providing access to alcohol for the sake of it or is it the old rubbish about visitors & tourism expecting it.If one can't survive without a drink for 4 days then give up the ghost. There is no reason for any booze barn to be open beyond 2am either.

Councillors lounge included ?

Does the ban apply to the top shelf stuff paid for by ratepayers.

MENTAL AGE OR WHAT

Posted on 10-02-2011 18:32 | By The Master

It would be more apppropaiet to measure the mental age of consumers rather than just how long since born, the later is not a good measure of ones ability to consumer booze on a sensible basis.

NEED ANOTHER DRINK

Guess that with now having to pay for thier own beer in the COuncillors lounge rather than ratepayers paying and paying ... that now have to find new ways to employ more Council staff so as to find new ways to creat a new way to get some booze. Sounds like another fantastic scheme like buying CGAF Ltd and employing 17 staff when there was no work to do for the existing staff never mind more.

Photo speaks a thousand words

The mayor is almost calm and relaxed going by the photo, is that before or after?

Looks like been on something ?

Perhaps there is a "chamber of secrets" in the Council somewhere that was sealed up a long time ago (a bit before the last election in fact it would seem) in which resides such horrid things that none in COuncil wanted found. In fact some even left at a time when it was sealed up perhaps. The "other" part of the phot tends to indicate teh initial happiness found within but what else has been released at that same moment?

LIFTS AND SIX PACKS

So the lift has made it to the basement this time to the cellar (chamber of secrets) it is pretty obvious a lot more has been let out than a six pack short of a dozen, perhaps even the truth about the fincnaes hsa also belatedly sneeked out as well.

Better than six packs

Looking at the photo the Mayor has lined up everything on tap

OFF TO WELLINGTON WE GO

Posted on 14-02-2011 08:38 | By The Master

Guess that means the Mayor and other essential staff (most likely about 20 or something) will all be off to Wellington for a week or so?

THE ALMIGHTY HAS SPOKEN!

THE ALMIGHTY HAS SPOKEN! - he says: There is no reason for any booze barn to be open beyond 2am either. Sorry GOD, but I like to go out drinking after 2am - I never commit crimes against other - why should I be punished? What makes 2am so special anyway? There is nothing wrong with people getting drunk - they have been doing it for centuries - the PROBLEM is when people commit crimes against others. What is wrong with educating people that if they commit a crime against others they are severelly punished. Try thinking of an alternative remedy to the use of force, and thereby commiting another offence - they are there should you be bothered to care to look and if you care about the rights of the individual

Do something - apart from moan

Posted on 18-02-2011 14:55 | By The author of this comment has been removed.

One way doors is a great idea. It is a shame COUNCIL have to do it - it SHOULD have been something all the BARS got togehter and instigated themselves if they had any BRAINS - but NO - they are too lazy - now they will all be MOANING about rules the COUNCIL have put in place instead of doing something about the problems themselves. COME ON PEOPLE - this is not a game of "Whats the Council going to do about it" - Time to WEAN yourselves off the council TIT and start doing stuff for yourselves. The MORE council have to do, the more you invite them to interfere in your lives - the more Councillors will have to be employed - The more reasons people who have no IDEA about your business will be making rules concerning how you must run your business will be employed - The more Rates you will have to pay. I suppose its just much easier to moan about it than actually do something

So now its a problem

This is so stupid!! there are a dozen of bars&Cafe's along the strand, if they knew that this was going to be a problem, so why the hell did anyone get the go ahead to build them there in a line,??? so now its a problem for TCC to try and fix,???? dumb dumb!
