Council reject Pilot Bay petition

Tauranga City Council have rejected calls for Pilot Bay's boardwalk to be opened up to cyclists as well as pedestrians.

A petition was handed to the authority by resident Jo Wills this afternoon, which included more than 220 signatures in support of sharing the popular Mount Maunganui walkway.

However, council transportation manager Martin Parkes was quick to dismiss the request, insisting that the boardwalk would need to be a minimum of three metres in width to accommodate cyclists and walkers.

Jo had previously argued that adjacent road The Mall was unsafe for bike riders, with parking bays on both sides of the street which grow increasingly busy over the summer months.

Councillor Steve Morris also rejected the idea, pointing to large amounts of foot traffic on Pilot Bay, while Councillor Matt Cowley agreed with the application.

Jo had previously claimed the restriction on cyclists seemed 'counterproductive” and that the ‘no-cycling' signs were 'alienating a different group of people”.

'It has always been a shared space that cyclists could access and enjoy alongside other members of the community,” she says.

'The parked cars are a constant source of concern due to people often forgetting to check the road behind them before opening their car door.

'Any cyclist on the receiving end of a car door is not likely to escape without injury.

'The alternative is to stick right in the middle of the lane, which then causes frustration to all other traffic. Neither choice for a cyclist is appealing.

'The Mall is not a safe road for the type of cyclist who would be accessing that area for recreational purposes.”

Seems to me

Cyclists seem to want the roads and the footpaths. Some of them are dangerous enough on the roads forcing cars to cross the centre line to go around them. Now they expect to hog the footpaths as well. And yes I have seen how some cyclists ride around foot traffic. Shockingly.

Dangerous

I personally think this is a good decision as since bicycles have equal rights to board-walk and around the estuary they go so fast and could cause a nasty accident to families in picnic mode on seashore

A Excellent result by Martin Parkes and Councillors.

Absolutely correct result to keep walkers safe. NO dogs should be permitted either.

Here's a thought Jo

Get off your bike and walk it and yourself along the board walk. In walking, you become a pedestrian with the right to use the board walk!

still like to know why the boardwalk is so bent

I agree with the decision but wonder why there is so much hate towards cyclists. It seems people seem to easily overlook the fact that cyclists are often injured and killed by cars at fault and prefer to focus only on the slight inconvenience they can cause. It could be your kid that is killed by someone who doesn't look at a roundabout next. Life priorities people!

Common sense prevails.

Well DoneCouncil

Well Done, members of the Council! To be frank, I am quite stunned that a Councillor could not see the merits of Safety on Footpaths. It makes me think that decisions could still be made on emotion rather than fact. A number of people in comments around town have suggested that the Council actually implemented a cycle ban here. That's not correct. The ban on Cyclists using footpaths is a nation-wide one. Always has been. (Land Transport Act and Rules). What these couple of hundred petitioners actually asked for was that the Council OVERRIDE (cute word in the circumstances!) the current law and "make it legal" for folk to do what the whole country has been against for 130 years. I know, and others do too, that cyclists on footpaths are dangerous. And for confirmation, look around at the lawlessness on bikes. Thanks Councillors! Bill Gibson-Patmore

Correct decision

In this case. Board walk is just that, a walk to enjoy, as there is no entrance or exit as the Mall has.

Go take a jump

There was no other decision this wiffle waffle Council could make. The boardwalk is a relatively 2m wide walkway of a curving squiggly nature totally unfit for any sort of cycling in the presence of walkers.Ms Wills and Co don't have to ride their bikes down the Mall if they think it is dangerous or they are incapable of doing so.They could always dismount then simply walk along any footpath or walkway and it may even give them a different perspective of the real world. As for CR Cowley supporting the petition lets just say that it isn't the first and it won't be the last hairbrain initiative or scheme he supports in his hopefully short local body tenure.

At last a sensible decision by this council. There is hope for them yet

For safety will pedestrians be banned?

Obviously I'm stirring but will a white line be painted on the boardwalk for pedestrians to keep them from colliding. The number of people seen walking with their eyes glued to their cellphones leads to a number of near misses and collisions every day. A safety conscious Council should look into this.

why so much hate for cyclists?

Simple really - just look at the behaviour of some cyclists on the Daisy Hardwick track - a track for pedestrians and walkers. Cyclists not using bells when approaching from behind and using it as a racing track. I was knocked over by one of these on a corner. No I wasn't using earphones, just out for a walk by myself. He came at incredible speed from behind me, knocked me over, and didn't even stop. He was in his 60's at a guess. I know that a minority taint the majority but there are lots of these cyclists about...
