A research project looking at the potential for deep geothermal resources outside the known fields is currently underway in the Bay of Plenty.
The project is being undertaken by GNS Science in partnership with Bay of Plenty Regional Council, and involves the collection of magnetotelluric data to extend existing data coverage centered on Rotorua.

The aim of the research is to improve the understanding of the deep (3-to-7 km) geothermal resource potential in the wider region, including the Okataina Volcanic Centre.
The current work is focused on the area east of Lake Rotorua, and is the second stage of a larger research project involving GNS Science researchers based in Wellington taking place over the next four years.
According to GNS Science geophysicist Grant Caldwell, the initial results of the research are already proving extremely interesting.
'Over the last few years we have started to see the connection between the shallow parts of geothermal fields and the underlying volcanic systems which provide the heat,” explains Grant.
'Results from Rotorua to date and similar research north of Wairakei have enabled us to start to understand how geothermal systems like Rotorua work from tip to toe – from the surface features down to their volcanic roots.
'As a Crown Research Institute, our job is to provide baseline information that could then stimulate future development. It's been a tremendous help for us to have the additional support from the Regional Council for this research.”
Bay of Plenty Regional Council group manager strategic development, Fiona McTavish, says as managers of the resource, it is important this type of work is undertaken.
'Geothermal is recognised as an important asset for the Bay of Plenty region, offering potential to grow the region's economy and social communities,” says Fiona.
'We want to ensure we are utilising the resource as effectively and efficiently as possible for its long-term sustainability, as well as the future development of the region.
'This work is part of that goal – to understand more about different geothermal systems, their capabilities and potential.
'With careful management, the resource has capacity for growth in some areas and will continue to provide geothermal energy indefinitely. However, if too much is taken from a system it could be severely damaged.”

So now RC are claiming management rights over local Maori Geothermal resources much like Seabed Foreshore so as to again impose restrictions to gain money via licensing etc as they have done around the country and commonwealth yet have not paid a damn cent to Maori for these resources while constantly blocking local Maori efforts for last 40 years plus towards investing for exploitation of such for horticulture, hot pools and other uses which Maori have enjoyed for centuries. My grandfather was the best diviner in the BOP and taught Mr Hulme father of Dennis the racing driver to find these locations and then dig wells and thus we have a prior right established. What say yee ya thieving UK/Brit RC buggers. Bad enough councils have stolen Mount hot pools and other wells around the place.
I say ye have NO more rights than anyone else

Wisechief, you ask for a response, "I reject outright your claims of ownership". Your assertions of ownership, prior rights because someone you know dug a hole, because you or others were first to experience, exploit a natural resource, grates somewhat. Mankind played no part whatsoever in the creation of this 'god given' resource, and like most natural resources, mankind has abused (as in all cultures) and used.
Not so Wise Chief

You have a deluded conception of Maori so called 'rights' to NZ's natural resources. Why do you imagine that the Geothermal resources belong to Maori? They don't!! They belong to all New Zealanders. In this respect you probably think that Maori own any oil that may be found as the result of future drilling on the land and sea bed? You no doubt think that Maori own the land - above and below it. Don't forget the air we breathe - would you have us all paying a fee to Maori for that privilege too? Get with the times Wisechief! Be thankful for the multitude of benefits that we "UK/Brit RC Buggers" have showered upon your uncivilized and primitive past way of life. No charge!
We're all related anyway

Life evolved on planet earth. We are all descended from a common ancestor. If we go back far enough our great great great etc etc etc grandparents were amoeba. Why the racial tensions?

Wisechief is in the usual rave and rant B/S mode but that's fine because it just goes to show what the Poshs are made of and what they get up to when the cats away.
