Construction of a rock wall is being planned for Cooks Beach Reserve, while a geotextile sandbag wall at Brophy's Beach has now been completed.
Both works are part of Thames-Coromandel District Council's Costal Erosion and Beach Protection Project which looks for long-term solutions to preserve the peninsula's magnificent coastline.

The Mercury Bay Community Board supports the construction of a sloped rock revetment wall that will blend into the existing rock wall at Purangi Reserve in Cooks Beach.
Council says the wall is needed to protect the reserve, water pump station, storm water reticulation, and to a lesser extent at this present time Captain Cook Rd, from the effects of coastal erosion.
'Since June 2013 up to 10m of the reserve has been lost to erosion,” explains council. '[This has] resulted in the relocation of the Cook monument, the loss of the public seat, and the threat of inundation of the public wastewater pump station located within the reserve.”
Council adds that resource consent for the revetment wall will be publicly notified in due course.

Council says with the completion of the geotextile sandbag wall at Brophy's Beach in Whitianga, all that is left to do now is landscaping in the area.
'The first of the dune planting at Brophy's Beach has started with the Waikato Regional Council supplying the plants and Smart Environmental staff planting.
'Topsoil has been spread, levelled and grass seeded. There's been softfall installation on the northern area playgrounds and the rest will be installed in remaining playgrounds prior to Christmas,” adds council.
