Dame Susan Devoy was appointed Human Rights' Commissioner without qualifications or experience, but simply for her international sporting success. A knighthood might seem to have been enough recognition for her achievements.
Her appointment was initially opposed by some Maori because of critical comments she had made about the Waitangi Day proceedings. Subsequently her comments and actions have been more conciliatory towards, and less than objective in issues concerning, the Tangatawhenua.
Recently she spoke out about Parliamentary debates, which are privileged and completely outside her province. Now, with her support for changing Christmas, the heritage of our forebears on which the Nation was founded, to placate migrants and newcomers not of that heritage, she shows herself completely out of touch with the sensitivities, beliefs, and wishes of most New Zealanders. This must call into question her suitability for her position.
Bryan Johnson, Omokoroa.
