The new inner city transport centre on Willow Street is set to open on Sunday, March 20.
It cost $435,174 to build the new bus stops located by the Tauranga City Council buildings.
Final work is being carried out at the new inner city transport centre on Willow Street before it opens on March 20.
A further $61,500 was spent on upgrading lighting.
About 10,000 people are expected to use the transport centre every week.
Bay Hopper Buses will always depart from Willow Street, but occasionally will drop passengers on Durham or Wharf Streets.
The project has involved extending the existing canopy on the council side of Willow Street and constructing a new canopy on the Masonic Park side of Willow Street.
New street lights and lights under the canopy were installed.
Upgraded furniture, such as seats, sign boards and rubbish bins were also added.
It has taken about four weeks to erect the new canopy and about the same amount of time to complete the work on the council side of Willow Street.
Willow Street was one of two locations council was considering for the new transport centre.
Durham Street was also considered, but the cost of building there was estimated at $958,000 and New Zealand Transport Agency would not allocate funding for the site.
Some business and retail leaders have opposed the Willow Street bus stops, saying it will have a negative impact on business.

Millions spent and all you see are a few pipes and a bit of perspects attached here and there. Durham was the obvious place to put a proper bus shed, not this. Bet the consultants would have cost $500k of the $958k spent. Just another example of the competence of TCC all be it VERY SMALL compared to the usual achievements such as Mt Greens, Baypark, Route K and others. The consistant theme here is that they all have independant prier reviews that condemn them, so that is like a "GREEN" light for TCC to get into it and multiply the project to enhance the losses. Proven Leadership.
$435k ? sounds to low ?

Along with many others I am interested to know ~ 1/ If this project was under or over budget and by how much? 2/ Are the figures quoted for the 'completed' job or are there still bits and pieces to be done? 3/ When will the project "be completed" as in no more work charged to this account? Thanks in anticipation from some concerned citizen's that support "Citizens Monitoring Council" PS ~ How do you feel about an independent group of "Citizens Monitoring Council"?
IN THE WRONG PLACE

Thats not the full cost at all it is nearer $1m in total if you include the 50% put up by NZTA.Instead of trying to make it look like a good deal TCC need to advise cost of whole project(that means everything)then break it down to what TCC contributed & what NZTA contributed anything else is a nonsense.Still what would you expect from these turkeys- we sure need a TCC monitoring outfit to deal to them as soon as.

Well perhaps TCC should have asked, that may have helped to make a good decision. I would think that 9,990 of the users of the "LEAN TO" would be the public walking through. Just look at how many are in a bus sailing up any road, next to know one in a Bay Hopper these days. They even wanted to tint the windows so no one could see that no one was in the bus ... geeezzzeee wayne! That is PROVEN LEADERSHIP!
