Council picks new CEO

Tauranga City Councillors appear to have made a decision regarding the city's new chief executive officer.

Mayor Stuart Crosby and former Tauranga City Council CEO Stephen Town.

Former CEO Stephen Town resigned last July to take up a position with NZ Transport Agency in Auckland. Former deputy CEO Christine Jones has been acting CEO since Stephen's departure.

'We have had a series of meetings and interviews with a shortlist of four and we actually completed that yesterday,” says Mayor Stuart Crosby today.

'There are some procedures to happen and hopefully we can make an announcement within a fortnight.

'It could be sooner, it just depends on other processes you have to go through.”

He wouldn't say if the new CEO is someone already familiar with the Bay of Plenty.

'I can't give anything away at this stage, it would be inappropriate,” says Stuart.

'We had a superb group of people that we interviewed. They were all of them top quality.”

It was a tough decision, says Stuart, but when announced the public will see the person is most adequately suited for the position.

'Particularly where the city is heading into the future, and with all our issues,” says Stuart.

'It is very important, not just for the council, but the whole community including the wider Bay of Plenty.

'It's as critical a decision this group of councillors and myself will make probably for three years.”

Stuart is in Auckland today, and will be travelling to Christchurch on Friday representing the city of Tauranga at the earthquake memorial service.

'It will be a good opportunity for me to just appreciate the devastation,” says Stuart. 'People that have been there say it is not accurately represented on television.

'It is a lot worse than people would perceive it to be. So I think it's important I get a good understanding of it, so we can see what more we can do to help into the future, because it is going to be a long recovery process.

The city council is being inundated with offers of support for Ten Days in Tauranga, the scheme to bring 50 families to Tauranga for respite from Christchurch's ongoing post quake issues.

I can see the problem now

The photo tells the story and gives a clue what the problem is,Mayor Crosby has lost the top two inches off his head and we all know what that encompasses. For one horrible moment I thought the photo shot indicated the Gnome of Zurich had reapplied for the CEO job.Enquiries revealed that this nightmare wasn't reality thank God for small mercies (a bit of a pun)

wrong job description ?

Currently no one is suited to be at TCC the record of this bunch of ninnies speaks for itself .Past wrong appointments have proved to be a financial nightmare and there is nothing to suggest it will be any better this time around. The excesses have largely been satisfied at a huge financial cost. TCC need to appoint an undertaker or a liquidator to sift through the carnage not a CEO.

SOUNDS LIKE RUSSIAN ROULET

They picked another man for the job, that sounds like the preference of Mayor Crosby, hopefully someone with a few clues about efficiency and other important things.

A FINE MAN LOST

I hope that they can find a great man like Mr Stephen Town, he made such a lot of good decisions and led the ship wonderfully, he should be honoured properly.

Hard to select one that stayed afloat what with icebergs rocks a shot down the sprout a so on.Perhaps Good Ship Lollypop has a certain ring to it as a bit of a pantomine - yes I like that it is quite descriptive.

WM, what are you on, Stephen Town has been the big player in the mess that is there now, debt is ROCKETING over $400m (was about $50m when he started in about 2002) and will all the bills rolling in now the debt is likely to be somewhere around $600-700m in 2-3 years from now. The only reward one should award here is a set of orange overalls from you know where !

THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER

The man "desired" has apparently dropped his bundle and headed up stream to green pastures already. Looks like teh Councillors are now heading back to the drawing board on that one ... another six months to see a change at HQ.
