City leaders receive pay rise

Tauranga City Councillors are getting a pay rise after accepting the decision of the Remuneration Authority to increase the councillor salary pool to $758,828 from $752,643.

This amounts to a 0.8 per cent increase to the pool from the 2010/11 level and is worth at least $600 more to each of the councillors.

In a separate salary pool, Mayor Stuart Crosby receives a pay rise of $5600, bringing his income for the 2011/12 year to $132,100.

This is an increase of 4.2 per cent.

It places the Tauranga Mayor as the sixth best paid mayor in the country, following behind, the other five main centres; Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton and Dunedin.

The councillor remuneration pool increase is to be divided among the councillors relatively evenly.

The deputy mayor's salary is moving from $83,564 to $84,233.

Councillors who chair a committee are having their salary increase from $80,564 to $81,226.

Remaining councillors see their pay rise from $73,564 to $74,171.

MORE FOR LESS

Posted on 19-04-2011 12:48 | By WOMBLE

Does that mean that they will pay money in when they get it wrong?

Performance Based

Posted on 19-04-2011 12:50 | By cinik

If it was performance based they would be paying the ratepayers.

If Earnt

Posted on 19-04-2011 14:25 | By tabatha

By my heading I mean if they start listening to the people that put them there. Also if they make sure the new CEO does spend money as if there is a bottomless amount of money. All these people can very quickly forget who put them in the position. They are representatives not there as of right eg Royalty.

so whats changed ?

isn't it typical ... when the going gets tough seems the ones that haven't proved their worth get rewarded .... it's a never ending cycle

Mayor

The mayor (Fred Karno) and the rest of his army differ from the real thing in that the original Fred and his army created a "riot of laughter out of chaos!" No laughter here though. Just a mountain of debt and another pay rise" to enable them to create more chaos.

True colours

Kinda indicates that they are in it for the money, not a good sign! The trouble is the way the system is set up anyone that the private sector wouldn't touch with a barge pole can stand up and get employment as a councillor no qualifications, no CV and no interview - must send an interesting message to all those qualified hugely indebted university students - why vote ? Times have changed maybe we need to look at what the system is intended to do and what it is actually doing. I wonder what the Local Government Commission does? Good on you boys - lead by example be proud of your convictions and sleep sound.

Actually ...

Posted on 19-04-2011 18:15 | By Murray.Guy

The increase is actually a DECREASE as it's 0.4% a year with reduced expenses. Lets not get too carried away!

Expenses

Posted on 19-04-2011 18:34 | By monty111

Expenses are what you incur during the course of your "work" and then you claim back what you have spent! Nothing to do with your wage INCREASE.

Democracy

Do we deserve the kind of public servants who think this is OK? Isn't there even ONE Councillor who realises how insensitive this is? A city laden with debt takes on more debt so that the snouts already in the trough can indulge themselves even further. Don't blame them, blame the people who didn't vote... And remember who to vote against next time.

Of course it is an 'increase' wake up Murray and smell the roses ... I will try and make this simple, Just because you are still there does not mean the $$$/red carpet jsut keeps rolling out endlessly. The pay should reflect the responsbility and of course most importantly the results. Now of course you ahev been there long enough to know what the results are of lets say the last 4-8 years have been and of course you know what is coming. Either way means Councillors should be paying money in and a lot of it.

Oh my

Jees there's a lot of parsimonious busy-bodies in this city. In real terms (eg adjusted for inflation) this represents a pay CUT, yet we still hear all the same moaning. Everyone talks about pay for performance - how much performance do you think you'll get if you tight-wads insist that a councillors pay should never be adjusted, even in the minor way done here.

Wow...

It must bee really hard to live on $80K - $132K a year, bet you their families dont have an issue with buying milk and cheese ...but, hey....as long as the rich get richer aye....the rest of us will just keep working our butts off to survive

I would suggest that the majority of Tauranga residents have had to suffer pay freezes for the the last 2 years due to recession, yet our rates have increased regardless, gst increases, fuel price increases, food and other essentials have increased. Why should we then pay for politicians pay rises while we become poorer and poorer.... Viva la revolution!!

Do they deserve it?

I have no issue with what the Councillors are paid either way, the question is are we getting value for money. This is the question all Councillors need to address on an individual basis when appraising their individual contribution, and we as voters need to ask before casting our votes next time.

Pay Rise

Posted on 20-04-2011 17:55 | By Glen Clova

What a joke they all sling off at one another when in council to score browny points but when you get down to the nitty gritty they are all tarred with the same brush.GREED.

Cut out the Chaff

Posted on 20-04-2011 21:15 | By Hebegeebies

This pay rise is an irrelevancy and it is trivial. If we were getting any value for money from what we pay 11 TCC COUNCILLORS then at $759k it is not a great amount. However we currently have a pack of drones ensconced warming seats having the wool pulled over their eyes by the TCC bureaucracy and blundering about in the dark . The INEVITABLE result is that Councillors cost Tauranga ratepayers tens of millions of dollars each year on wasteful stuff and that is where the real cost issues lie.Until we sort this out we are going backwards.A Local Government Commissioner would straighten it out immediately saving us the $759k paid to Councillors who would be dumped out.So who is for this option then ??

$10 TAURANGA

Lets see now $760 + the Mayor of $135 makes about $10 for every person in Tauranga, that explains a lot。

Reason to Justify Parking Fees

Posted on 21-04-2011 11:45 | By The Sage

So are the Council pay rises coming from the burgeoning cost of parking in the CBD? I doubt that one of these Councillors has ever run their own business and, what's more, would have no idea how to. Council should be encouraging people into the CBD, not driving them out, which, in turn, kills the businesses. You can abolutely lay money on the fact that the parking wardens will be out, like Rottweillers, over Easter, ticketing cars. The city is already becoming a ghost town. Last one out please turn out the lights.

IT MAKES ME SICK!

Posted on 22-04-2011 12:33 | By Vomit

Leaves a very bitter taste in the mouth about what this says to all, the WORSE ity gets the bigger the payment, the more minions runing around the more the pay, nothing to do with "RESULTS" that are meaningful.

DO THEY KNOW ... WHAT THEY HAVE DONE

Posted on 23-04-2011 08:47 | By YOGI BEAR

Or more to the point have not done, they have not fulfilled the shoes or the job they have taken on, the end results now show clearly that this is the case. Yet some BOFFIN in Wellington decides to pay them more, like for what?

LESS FOR MORE

Posted on 24-04-2011 10:15 | By BUSH WACKER

We all pay more each and every year without there being any meaningful end result, plan, objective or anything useful to be seen.

PREVIOUS JOBS

Posted on 25-04-2011 10:45 | By YABBA DABBA DO

Although it may well amaze many the Mayor had a job before being in Council, he had a electricians business. Rumour has it that it was sold then he well did not quite make it into Council that time so had to see how to get a few customers back for something to do for the next three years.

CHOP CHOP TCC

Posted on 26-04-2011 07:20 | By EYESPY

Pay by performance not bloated staff numbers inefficiency or on the basis of failed schemes and financial mismanagement. As none in Tauranga City Hall would pass the test eject them all save the money clean out the nest and get a replacement crew that can do the business.

@ EYESPY

Posted on 26-04-2011 16:03 | By SLIPPERY SALAMI

If they were all paid on 'performance' then they all would be paying money in each and every week, then all of us ratepayers would end up getting a dividend cheque rather than a rates bill, wouldn't that be nice.
