The debate over whether to have tsunami sirens is being officially revived at the Tauranga City Council's projects and monitoring committee meeting today.
A decision to drop tsunami warning sirens from the council's package of warnings was made in January.
People gathered on Mount Maunganui in September 2009 to watch a tsunami surge arrive.
At that meeting councillors opted instead to buy into ReadyNet, a system using mains pulse alerted devices, and the Bay of Plenty Civil Defence Management Group's public alerting mechanism.
The then agreed package deal includes a range of communication options from radio and television announcements, community contact systems using texting and emails, and mobile public address loudspeakers and door-to-door warnings.
The door-to-door warning option was ridiculed by some councillors after widespread distribution of video of the Japan tsunami on March 11 – and revived discussion about tsunami warning sirens.
The projects and monitoring committee meeting on March 28 recommended a group, comprising councillors, staff and Civil Defence staff re-assess siren options.
This group will present its summary of findings at today's meeting for feedback which will give pointers for the next stage of the process – a recommendation for a council decision.
Inadequacies in the existing tsunami warning system have been exposed by several tsunami alerts in recent years and backed up by the release last year of the Civil Defence ‘inundation map' which illustrates the magnitude of the task of alerting and moving tens of thousands of Papamoa residents to safe ground in the event of a warning.
Historically there have been four tsunamis exceeding a five metre run up height in the last 4000 years.

You'd think a coastal city like Tauranga would have had a decent warning system installed 50 years ago. Unbelievable someone could recommended a door-to-door knocking system. There have been big tsunamis in the past. There will be another biggie that will wipe out Mt Maunganui, might be 1 year or 10,000 years from now but it will happen.
The Solution already exists

What's the problem here???? The USA made a special siren that could be heard for miles during the "Cold War".Look at it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_air_raid_siren Why reinvent the wheel yet again??? Here is a device made to alert huge areas of populations QUICKLY, VERY EFFICIENTLY, 24/7, already tested and PROVEN, and known to last at least 20 years out in the elements and still be reliable.
A group to recommend what exactly its a no brainer

GO with the Pacific Rim sirens get the Hawaiians to come and show us how to plan ahead because it looks like the deadwood that is responsible for our shores and safety just isn't up with the play.In WW2 the Poms could hear the air raid sirens up to 10kms away- so sirens have not improved in 70 years. Frankly I do not believe it
really its mother nature

in all fairness to trying to do our best to be ahead of mother nature how about texts radio and tv newsflash alerts. its very hard to hear sirens and as NZ is a skinny coastal country which is how we like it that does come with risks, where on earth could we go???
At the risk of further upsetting you ...

It's hard to know whether to laugh, cry, ... Elected members are advised the sirens contemplated by our local experts are mounted on existing poles (power/light, number 49 in total with an audible radius in the region of 400 meters. I kid you not!

People - this is one issue where it is important to remember who is behind these decisions. We need to know which councillors have voted for the best solution and which ones have voted for the door knock option. These are people that are playing with our lives in the event of something happening. Dont forget that these same people dont hesitate to spend millions on a pool upgrade - that the community said they didnt want. Just pleased that the commissioner has knocked that one back. Councillors - it's time for you all to step up to the plate and declare your position on this issue - this is not a nice to have, but a need to have. Where do you stand??
Why not use SMS?

Have a quick read of this: http://blog.i-text.co.nz/ The technology behind this SMS system has been designed for mass alerting as part of a tool box approach to aid Tauranga in warning, evacuation, and post disaster support and aid.
That's all very well i-text

but I was in Lyttelton on the afternoon of 22 Feb and it was 2hrs before I could get a text message out to anyone. Could your new technology guarantee more satisfactory performance in a similar future scenario?

Like that is not a surprise because byt eh time say a SMS or TXT arrives it maybe hours after it was sent to all so that may well be just to late. I think it is better to just get those Sirens up and running as soon as it can be done. We may not need them for 10 years or more but you just never know do you.
TURN ON THE SIRENS FOLKS

There is free parking at the Hot Pools and it is now as safe to park there, no meters, no fines and no overstayers. We can all enjoy the same free parking as the Art Gallery car.

Simple concept, by the time you get a text or SMS about a tsunami it would already have washed through!
What the council going to do about it?

Whats The Council going to do about it? Whats the council going to do about it? Whats the council going to do about it? The record is stuck people - time to learn a NEW tune! With peoples lives at stake (those in the danger area) you would think THEY would do something about it (apart from bleat Whats the council going to do about it) If they spent as much time DOING something instead of spending their time saying whats the council . . . They would have it done by now! Buggered if I would trust the council with the life of a Hampster, let alone MY most prized posession (my life)
