Council shows at Home Show

The Tauranga City Council is going to be an exhibitor at this year's Home Show, on at Baypark this weekend.

The theme for the city council's exhibit is ‘sustainable living' and will include interactive models discussing water efficiency, solid waste, eco-energy and pollution prevention.

A scene from the 2010 Home Show.

This information from Tauranga City Council weekly bulletin for the week beginning, Monday, May 9, published below.

City Waters

Water Supply:

  • Cleaning, inspection and any required maintenance work on the Waikite #1 Reservoir is now underway.

  • Water main upgrades continue in Matua and Bureta.

  • Reminder that water main construction has started in Papamoa Beach Road from Parton Road to Palm Springs Boulevard. There is a speed restriction of 30km/h in place at the construction site.

  • Water main upgrade contract on Panorama Drive and Kaitemako Road has been awarded and works will be completed by 17 June.

  • TCC will have a presence at the Tauranga Home show this year. To be held from 13-15 May at Baypark. The theme will be Sustainable Living. Interactive models covering water efficiency, solid waste, eco energy and pollution prevention will be available for public learning and fun.

Drainage

  • Six tomos around stormwater manholes, sumps or outlets occurred in the last week. Likely caused by high water tables after recent rains.

  • A section of Tara Road stormwater open drain at Ascot Downs subdivision was cleared in the last week.

  • A number of blocked sump grates caused localised flooding in the recent rain event. At this time of the year the leaf fall is an issue and it will help if residents can be vigilant and clear or report leaf debris.

  • Smoke testing of wastewater systems in the Topaz Drive area of Papamoa has been delayed until a few fine days are forecast.

Parks and Leisure

  • The new planting season has started along the coastal conservation zone between Motiti Reserve and Taylors Reserve.

  • Two renewal jobs postponed due to weather conditions: the Fergusson Park Safety Surface renewal (in last week's bulletin), new date for commencement is Monday next week - weather permitting. The other renewal job is a section of boardwalk at the Mount Maunganui Main Beach, opposite one of the pedestrian crossings. This work will proceed from May 12, weather permitting.

  • A large camphor tree outside the Council's Willow Street offices will be removed next week. The tree roots have been infiltrating the concrete foundations of the building. These are large invasive roots which required extensive pruning to enable repairs to the building. Fifty per cent of the tree's roots have had to be removed. Removing this much root area affects the tree's health and stability. After assessing options to retain the tree, council arborists had to make the call that the tree needs to be removed. This is in line with the council's tree policy.

City Projects

  • Beach Road Walkway - repairs and reconstruction nearly complete; hopefully the walkway will be able to reopen by next weekend.

Transportation

  • Devonport Road: Southern Pipeline pipe laying is continuing. Vehicle access to Devonport Road at the intersection of 15th Avenue is restricted. Reinstatement work continues. Work will be progressing on Devonport Road between 15th and 18th Avenues. Lane restrictions will be in place. Drivers should use an alternative route if possible.

  • Eleventh Avenue: Minor changes have been made to lane markings and signal phasing at the intersection of 11th Avenue and Cameron Road. Please take extra care at the intersection and watch for the changes to road markings and traffic signal phasing.

  • Hairini Link Advanced Works: Work continues on a new hand rail for the south side of the Turret Road Bridge. Pedestrians and cyclists are advised to take care when moving through this area.

  • Maunganui Road: Work to install a new pedestrian crossing on Maunganui Road outside the Mount Library continues. Please take care when driving through the area.

Trenching work has moved back to Oropi Road outside Greerton Park. Lane restrictions will be in place. Please use caution and reduce speed when driving in these areas.

Send in the cones

The cones have been outside the library on Maunganui Rd since before Easter but there's been no sign of any workers or action. Maybe they're AWOL. There's been a library there for 40 years that I know of, with a pedestrian crossing but now we "need" one. It'll probably be a pricey process as the leanto garage for the Library Bus , behind Mount Library was a bargain at $150,000. Three sides and a roof, cheap at half the price. Drive by, have a look at what they get for your money.

Mmmm

Appearing at their own show, maybe they couldn't sell all the stands to exhibitors and they've stepped in to make up the numbers? Or been enticed in by the promoters to fill the gaps. All expenditure is good, as it helps for the next salary boost for the elected members.

Hiring an expensive stall at their own stadium's Home Show I suppose is one way to recover some of the millions$ lost on this old drainage site. What a farce it all is. TCC are even exhibiting all the things it gets wrong. How bizzare ?

Hired stall

I think Council are not paying for this, there was no need for Council to pay as we pay all the losses anyway.
