Base track closed until August

Mauao's base track will not be fully open until at least August.

A section of the track is closed due to slips and flood damage, preventing walkers and runners circling the entire base of Mauao.

Slips on Mauao in February were the start of the popular walkway spot's closures.

Extensive planning and design work is currently being carried out by Tauranga City Council to repair the base track and damaged areas of summit tracks.

The repair programme is being planned in a way that aims to keep machinery movements to a minimum over the base track.

Three slips that exit at the same point make up Mauao's largest washout on its northeastern side.

A 15 metre long bridge will be built across this washout. The aim is to allow future debris to wash under the bridge with minimum damage to the bridge and track.

'The challenge is to find a solution that is the most economic for the long term; to design for most storm events while accepting that ‘minimum damage' in this environment is no guarantee,” says Tauranga City Council spokesperson Marcel Currin.

The most significant weak spot on the base track is the stone wall that runs alongside the track, about 50 metres from sandy beach.

Heavy rain has undermined the base of the wall. Work to repair it will begin next week, costing about $30,000 for it to be stabilised over three weeks.

$30,000 ? we could have three Sydneham Parks maintained for a year for that kind of money.

WHAT ~ only $30K ~ Yea Right!!

What a lot of rubbish. It will be and has cost way more than that. We are again being fed absolute crap by faceless TCC bureaucrats that do as they want when they want with Ratepayers money. And they do it without any clear upfront and honest accountability. Nor will they provide TRUE n HONEST financial reports to us... in fact they won't supply any!! This is not good enough Stuart! The rot sets in at the top. The track should be closed and the owners and users pay ~ and if it means so much to the local business's they are welcome to contribute as well. I agree you you Yabba Dabba Do. In closing, if I was allowed to call these people liars I would. Seems to be the only way we are going to get TCC councillor's and faceless bureaucrats to put up. COST PER METER

To build a bridge and the problem still remains to keep all the boys in a job for next winter when it all needs to be repaired again, a longer term answer is needed. PLANT TREES, perhaps some of those kauri Trees that are soon to be surplus or maybe a few NZ Christmas Trees, now there is a thought, they are all going for free at the moment.

Procrastination & no urgency

August sounds wrong but typical of TCC and by my maths 3months from February is May which is what we were told at the start.Nothing comes in under budget or on time if TCC has any say in it.Why not deal with the most used track first.?

Spend it all

Posted on 12-05-2011 18:32 | By dgk

And others here have demanded that Council pull out all the stops and spend whatever is needed to get the walking tracks open as quickly as possible. They seem to want council to spend a million or two on these tracks....

sydneham park yeah right

Posted on 12-05-2011 18:46 | By Mr bay

I checked out this park and it is one of the most dodgy parks in town that no one even knew existed until recently I certainly wouldn't drive to visit it...as for the mount it attracts 1000s of people every year who wish to walk it. These people a lot from out of town bring dollars into this town something needed. lets forget sydneham park and concentrate on the areas that help this town.....

Shut up whingers

Man there's a lot of whingers posting comments on this website. I love to hate council as much as the next ratepayer, but you guys are just so far over the top about it.

Actually the problems that COuncil face today are quite large so I can understand the moaning about a lot of things, we are doing our best to remedy these things of course but it takes a bit of time.

How long is a piece of string? Do you know ? Does it matter to you, I dont think so HUOA would know for sure.

BUILD A BRIDGE

Posted on 13-05-2011 12:06 | By YABBA DABBA DO

That will then wash away with the next landslide, better to just run the bulldozer through it (and TCC), make the track cost $500, fixed tomorrow. PS how come it takes three weeks to build a bridge but months later it reopens, are they awaiting for the winter rains to wash it away before it is even used?

Hope the Mount Track reopens soon

I am saddened that this base track has been closed for so long and hope that the work can be completed soon so we and visitors to the Mount can all enjoy this beautiful walk once again.
