People expecting free central city parking on Saturday morning received a nasty surprise – and a parking ticket.
Free parking on Saturdays doesn't start until July 1, says Tauranga City Council group communication advisor, customer and environmental services, Alison Clifford.
And even after July 1, there will still be tickets issued for overstayers and no registrations or warrant of fitness.
'The confusion seems to be out in the public, some people were a bit tetchy with the parking officers on Saturday mornings,” says Alison.
'They obviously read the headlines, saw free parking and wondered why people were still giving them tickets.”
The public are a bit confused, and some people were quite rude, says Alison.
'I don't think there were any assaults, just verbal abuse,” says Alison.
'People were quite upset because they thought it was free and it wasn't.”
Parking wardens issued about 40 tickets on Saturday, 'which is about normal, it's pretty average,” says Alison.
Normal weekend parking charges apply until July 1, which gives council staff time to make the necessary adjustments to parking machines and reflects the start of the new financial year.
The first day of free weekend parking on the CBD streets, and in the Durham Street and Elizabeth Street parking buildings, is Saturday, July 2.
Parking officers will still be enforcing time zone limits to ensure everyone gets a chance to park in these areas.
Parking infringements may still be issued if people park too long in a time-zone area. Parking officers will also still be checking vehicle warrant of fitness and registration.

Some parking nazi's deserve grief IMHO

I parked at the Mt Maunganui boat ramp parks winter mid week. Most parks were empty, so sat in the car, ate lunch and used the free EOL wifi. However, the Tauranga parking nazi came and threatened to ticket me if I did not move. I pointed out (nicely), that the spaces were mostly empty and I would move if necessary. However, the 'warden' replied sarcastically (his words) "It doesn't work that way". I have no problem with ticketing in general but surely these clowns can use some common sense. My significant rates pay for those parks, I don't see why I shouldn't be able to use them when the boating people are not boating.
%*#@! bureaucrats

They can't actually use any nous. So what did they want you to do? Start the car and move to the next space? Got no imagination at all some of them, just "control freaks"
take a leaf out of the Whakatane parking wardens

If you are overstaying in your carpark in Whakatane, the wardens there will let you know and give you the option to move. Not in Tauranga, we have a couple of little hitlers here that I have seen gleefully writing up tickets in front of people. It comes down to policy from the council...they should be the one to give the wardens a mandate to warn people first if possible, without ticketing. Would make for a much better world
TOO FUNNY

hey they have been giving tickets in central Tauranga as long as I remember, might as well stop moaning a live with it. And how about parking in the normal parks instead of the boat ones bet there was plenty mid week........
Attitude

It seems from the posts that the REAL problem is the attitude of the Wardens, who are not interested in being reasonable, just in gathering revenue. It is a fair bet that this is what they have been instructed to do, so they are just doing as instructed. The responsibility lies with their masters (although "just following orders" was not considered a valid defence at Nuremburg...) I would draw the attention of the people who mentioned "Nazis" or "Hitler" to "Godwin's Law" (GOOGLE is your friend). Maybe there should be an exception to Godwin for Parking Wardens because it is almost impossible to discuss them without such parallels being drawn.
LINE UP THE VICTUMS

Guess that they have but a few weeks to extract those last few $$$ before the options of easy money dry up a bit.
No assaults?
Posted on 09-06-2011 07:48 | By Chris
'I don't think there were any assaults, just verbal abuse”. Verbal abuse can be considered assault. What makes people think it's OK to verbally abuse someone for doing their job? You pathetic people should be ashamed of yourselves.
rude obnoxious little tyrants

Just "doing their Job" is Not an excuse! The wardens in the concentration camps were "just doing their job too." I object to being forced to pay for rude obnoxious little tyrants, who make going into town an unpleasant experience and who keep me and many others away from shopping down town. Council should hand the parking responsibility over to the CBD shop owners IMMEDIATELY. Let THEM decide what is good for their livelihoods. The council are parasites - bloodsuckers - on the back of the productive

Easy answer, don't go to town on Saturday and shop at the malls as the council wants you to do.

TCC Fun Police -not !!

The confusion is the real issue surely one would think sanity(what a silly thought) might prevail and some leniency applied. No wonder people get so up tight with TCC etc. especially when TCC attempt not to abide by own rules themselves the pack of artzs they are.

Can you imagine the chaos if there were no parking wardens in Tauranga's CBD. There are not that many spaces to start with and those would quickly be filled and stay filled for considerable lengths of time, possibly all day. Where would you park then? I cannot understand why people take the risk of patrking in a metered space and don't put any money in it, or overstay the time they have purchased. This is not rocket science people - you don't play the game you pay the penalty - very simple. It's very easy to criticise people without first informing yourself so that you actually know what you are talking about. The Parking Wardens obviously have job descriptions which specify exactly what they have to do and how they should do it. If they "exercise discretion" they may well be stepping outside their authority and putting their jobs on the line. Did anyone think of that? Some of these comments are so uninformed that you have to wonder what planet the commentators dropped in from.
job description
Posted on 09-06-2011 19:29 | By The Tomahawk Kid
I guarantee the job description of a parking warden does not specify that they must be officious and rude. The science behind being a parking warden is not Rocket science either! So I don't need to be a weatherman to know which way the wind blows. As I said before - remove the council from the parking business and hand it over to those whose livelihood depends on it. Why should parking be any business of the council - its none of their business apart from the fact that it is a cash cow. Money taken by the shop owners of the CBD would go back into promotion of the CBD, not into the council slush fund or to pay for all the other misadventures that they lose money on.

Silly thought indeed, dont you know they write the rules as they go. A rule for every occasion and every need, of theirs of course.
