Tauranga City Councillors say their vested interest in the election signs debate places them too close to the issue and so are recommending the issue be publicly debated.
Mayor Stuart Crosby wants the council to adopt a policy similar to the Rotorua District Council's, which bans election signs from public property.
Election sign clutters such as this at Memorial Park in 2010 are the subject of a Tauranga City Council debate as to whether these signs should be permitted on public property.
He presented a copy of the Rotorua policy at the Tauranga City Council's strategy and policy committee meeting on June 14.
Stuart noticed the difference Rotorua's policy made to the appearance of the town when he visited there shortly before the last election.
Returning to Tauranga over the Pyes Pa Road he encountered the plethora of roadside election signs on the Tauranga roadside berms.
'It was such a stark contrast to go to a city that manages it well, and to come back here and see the dog's breakfast at every intersection and the vandalism it attracts,” says Stuart.
'I think it's time for changes – as the city grows it doesn't look good.”
Speakers at Tuesday's strategy and policy committee meeting invariably prefaced their remarks with admissions of being guilty to polluting the streets with their own road side election signs, before widening the issue to whether other solutions might better be applied. These suggestions included shortening the time the signs can be displayed from six to three weeks.
There was also some discussion about the fairness of people-in-power restricting others' opportunities and access to seats on council.
It's always easier for the All Blacks to impress the selectors because they are seen on a regular basis says Rick Curach. The selectors don't see so many newbies.
When Bill Grainger asked Stuart if he thought it would be fair, Stuart said:
'There's nothing fair in an election – absolutely, there's nothing fair about it.
'There are those who have more resources, those who have a higher public profile, those who are connected to groups and those who create a group themselves and have some commercial means.
'If you think having signs, or not having signs, is creating a level playing field, I don't believe from my years of experience, that it exists.
'There's a whole number of variables that come into the success or otherwise of any particular candidate, and my analysis is that signs in a public space make very little difference.”
The limited consultation process is expected to take about six weeks, with the results back before the committee in mid to late August.

Come on you elected people, You all clearly understand what an eyesore these sign's are. Just change the rules and ban them. Don't be a bunch of weaklings. "Vested interest in the election signs debate" That is just so pathetic, You were all elected to head this city in a positive direction. This issue does not need much debate.
Rubbish

What will elected Health Board member Matua Parkinsons next campaign sign say given his sideline assault on rugby touch judge last Saturday? Pulling No Punches - Just pants down
A Joke

This same Council polices and fines car dealers who have just one For Sale sign in a car that is parked on their grass verge, their reason being that it is a dangerous distraction to passing traffic, yet they can litter the streets with as much distraction as they like.

Loking at his last election sign of "Forward Thinking" what will Matua Parkinsons new sign say?
Yip ban the low cost options ...

Yip, ban the low cost options. If folk can't afford to spend $10,000 plus, or haven't got the rich mates or relationship with the business community, Chamber of Commerce, to carry out a branding and election campaign, it's likely they wouldn't suit as a City Councillor - That's the attitude of some and it's a direct attack on democracy, further disadvantages those less well connected, less affluent! Takeaways create more rubbish every day! PS: I didn't use signs last election, this isn't about me!
SIGANGE REFLECTION OF CALIBRE

Perhaps it would be more important to have a debate on getting a trruthful precie of Council candidates rather than signs. Included in that should be a run down on the results achieved of all candidates that is detailed and accurate (not the self written "spin" by themselves of course) more like credentials that is open to be challenged and verified, that would certainly lift the lid on the election as would risk including the truth for a change.
No Vote

They're an eyesore, then fall over in the wind and become litter. Put a sign up and you don't get my vote, and that's a promise!
Too many signs

the issue needs to be looked at, maybe a limit on the number of signs each candidate can place on public property and reduce the time frame. some candidates in the past have had a sign every 50 metres or less on main roads. Now that's an eye sore.
WHO REALLY CARES ABOUT THE SIGNS
Posted on 30-06-2011 00:51 | By TERMITE
There are signs all over the place and a lot worse than the election ones, it is only becasue they appear from no where for a month or so that you actually notice them. End result teh incumbants what to "restrict" the competion that is all there is to it, another nail in the democratic systems that is all.
WHAT DO THEY FEAR

Come on guys election signs for 1 month every 3years where is the issue. As long as do not become a nuisance obstruct vision limited in size and are correctly policed cannot see a problem.I would be for more concerned with the motives of those Councillors proposing the ban particularly Mayor Crosby and what their real agenda is.Still 2years from an election anyway.Try a snap election ??
No wonder

If voters are making their choice based on those signs, no wonder we have a cheap plastic imitation of a council.
NO DOWN TROU'S PERMITTED!

coming from the Mayor and Cronies is actually worse that what the signs put out. Just think of all the costly (as our ACTING CEO say's)staff time, the paper movements, printer use, probably o/time as staff are already fully committed, the additional pressure on other resources like tea n coffee, toilets, power & gas. You all get the drift aye? Never mind it is after all one way for the "Boss Man" to get much needed exposure. And come election time guess what??? He will be able this HUGE achievement to his HUGE profile ... *chuckles quietly* -Citizens Monitoring Council-
Waste of time and money

Here we go again - the full might of the council - all its brainpower and resources each swinging a sledgehammer . . . to break a peanut. Stop wasting your time and our money and do the important or ESSENTIAL things PROPERLY
Stop them doing it please

Get the TCC 'fun police' on the job with dawn raids to ensure there are no erections during the upcoming TCC elections.Success or otherwise should be reported on the TCC Council website.General Avigra.
Whats good for the goose is good for the gander

Do those opposing signs see a threat to their future in local body politics. Most of these people are the worst offenders anyway and perhaps to be fair TCC should ban all types of advertising including newspapers, TV, radio and websites etc -how about it TCC Councillors have you gut the guts to do that??
