The Bay of Plenty Regional Council is aiming to reduce costs by making efficiency changes to its vehicle fleet with fewer cars operating.
The council's finance and corporate committee chairperson Paula Thompson says they have looked closely at how the council's fleet worked and has succeeded in making savings by reducing the number of vehicles and using them better.
'It's great to see the council has reduced costs and increased efficiency, while still performing effectively,” says Paula.
'The trend over the last three years is very positive and we're confident it can continue.”
Corporate property manager Annabel Bridge says the savings have come by reducing the number of cars, having more diesel and less petrol vehicles and reducing the number of 4WDs.
'We are making smarter purchasing decisions and using our fleet more efficiently,” says Annabel.
'Although we travel more each year, over the past three years we've managed to reduce our vehicle fleet by nearly 10 percent – without affecting our performance.
'Diesel vehicles are now more fuel efficient and cleaner burning so we have more in the fleet – they also don't need servicing as often.
'We have also negotiated good rates with our supplier and we are buying more fuel, but our costs have stayed much the same,” says Annabel.

A more meaningful contribution to financial efficiency would have been not to have spent the $7200 on the Christchurch junket.Get the money back from the freeloaders now.Incidentally in the long run diesel is not more efficient or cheaper than petrol and simply you end up with orphan vehicles in NZ.A LOL decision
Agree and Disagree

Hebegeebies you obviously are not aware that the Environment BOP has adopted a system of wards where Maori are represented as elected councilors and with Maori Protocol when a chief, in this case the CEO moving to another job, needed to be supported by these people. I do not agree that the cost should be paid as such but there needs to be another way. At least they have been transparent in this not like the Tauranga Pools lot.

Of course but the parties and holidays were actually "Council business" right! at least that is what they will tell you. The savings will be no different to the TCC Mt repairs spendup, the money "was never there" and it will not cost ratepayers anything ... what a loand crap all of that story is. Bet all they are trying to do is siphon off a bit of fuel to pop into the plane for the next trip away and then call that "vehicle costs" ?
RUC and Rego unfair

Congratulations to the Council for discovering the benefits of diesel motoring. I have been enjoying these for the last 12 years when the first of the common rail diesels became readily available. They could make even more savings if they were to pressure government to reduce the Road User Charges and Registration fees on small vehicles. These are unreasonably greater than the petrol equivalents to the point where use of the more cost and environmentally efficient diesels is penalised.

Who gives a %$#@ about Maori protocol in a supposedly racism free Environment? They can do their mumbojumbo supporting a 'chief' at their own cost.

Sorry you feel that way, and I suppose you think I am Maori, but to disappoint you I am not, though family is linked to the first white settler in Russell. That was about 1819. So obviously welcomed there. Pity more people can not embrace two cultures. I presume speakup there are some things in the world you follow according to your beliefs.

You have missed the point, there are not "two cultures" in NZ at least there should not be, you want to be a fluffy duck then go find your own fluff and be a "duck" if that is what spins you wheels. Dont ask me to pay for that little spend up "UNLESS" you are prepared to pay for my picnic baskets also (that is caled sharing, not one way traffic) and leave my picnic baskets alone!
Both deals are losers

NZ is not Europe as diesel users are penalised on price and quality it is just not worth the effort and residual value of vehicles suffers.Oh and tabatha if maori want protocol then can pay for it because I won't.It wasn't even one of their own and it is amazing what people come up with when someone else is paying for the junkets.Time it was outlawed.

Bio-diesel

That's a good start Paula. Perhaps you can consider taking one step further by future-proofing the BOP Regional Council against the imminent end of the era of cheap oil by promoting a Regional Council car fleet that runs on sustainable bio-diesel or even a solar-powered electric vehicle fleet. It's time to lead by example and turn to clean energy; wean ourselves off our adiction to fossil fuels. Be bold and visionary. Our dependence on oil and fossil fuels is our vulnerability to Peak Oil.
Now to reduce RUC

Now that a local council has figured out the benefits of diesel, how long will it now take the government to see sense and reduce RUC for fuel efficient small diesel cars.
Car pooling even better

Sharing cars to and from meetings at Whakatane HQ would be an even better start, and it would save ratepayers all those mileage claims. As for the trip to Christchurch, that was unfortunate and should have been paid for by the participants. How fortunate the old CEO didn't get a new job in say London???

Smell the roses folks, the truth is that there are no Council staff that have a diesel vehicle at home, GOT IT !

Mate that is a pretty heavy comment, that goes really deep! But I am glad you said it, it actually makes complete sense that the savings are as a result of the reduction in "leakage", every business suffers from that, but of course in the real world few private employers provide freebee vehicles for all and sundry staff.
More savings possible

Why do so many of their vehicles have roof racks on them and often kayaks as well? This suggests that their use is permitted for weekend activities, or at least non work related activities. Get the roof racks off if they're not needed, there's another saving and should council really be supplying transport for recreational activities?

You talked about the trip cost but the wages x 7 were actually more expensive, it should be a holday not a day at work.
Ratepayers have enough without funding vehicle use for Council staff!!
Posted on 05-07-2011 08:31 | By ROCKY
EBOP vehicles should not be available for any private use purposes first because it is inherently wrong and secondly it would attract FBT tax.If the vehicles have roof racks etc on them then that will affect the fuel economy. If anyone observes any unauthorised private use report and blog it on Sunlive.

Its 2011 and these turkeys have figured out there are advantages to running a Diesel fleet...
DIESEL WAS ECONOMICAL
Posted on 06-07-2011 19:12 | By YOGI
But not anymore, buy the time you pay for road user tax it costs more than petrol, also and often diesel vehicles cost more to buy than petrol. It is now obviously a good time for RBOP to make this change as it will cost more, logical for BOFFINS to do that.
