Low customer numbers have forced the closure of the Tauranga City Council customer service desk inside the Mount Maunganui library.
Tauranga City Council group communications advisor Alison Clifford says the desk closes on July 29.
Mount Maunganui library service centre advisor Tina Milroy.
'This means customers will no longer be able to pay council bills or request council information from the Mount Maunganui library,” says Alison.
She says they will still be able to access agendas, minutes, consultation documents and submission forms though.
'They will also be able to use a dedicated computer to access the council website and people can drop off rates rebate applications and submission forms and use a phone to speak directly to our call centre staff.”
People can still pay their bills at any New Zealand Post Shop provided it has a barcode on it.
This includes property and water rates, dog re-registration and parking infringements.
'Other options for bill payments include direct debit and automatic payments, online payments, credit card or by posting a cheque or visiting council offices in Willow Street.”

PROMOTION FOR SURE! You are right, no one looses a job even when there is no job in the first place, nothing to do in between and even when it does not exist anymore. There is still a "job" there, but that is not her fault actually it all starts at the top, with the POINTLESS POINTY HEADS philosophy of "job for life whatever the cost".

If the lack of people using the service is the true reason for closing the Service Centre, why not simply tranfer some of the work from the Tauranga office to the service centre? Surely in this electronic age it's not rocket science? (Unless of course there is not enough work in the main office to tranfer some of it out). This would keep the centre open for those that need it, because not all older people are comfortable with a computer. Also some forms have to be signed in front of a council officer, and this would mean a 40K round trip, plus parking fees for a Papamoa resident. We certainly pay enough in rates to have the service we want, and that should come before any new silly scheme the councillors dream up to waste our hard earned money.
