Iwi reps get training boost

Three iwi representatives are to undergo Bay of Plenty Regional Council training in its programme called ‘Making Good Decisions' in resource management.

The three people to receive the training are: Neil Te Kani for the Mauao sub region (Ngai Te Rangi), Hera Naera for the Okurei sub region (Ngati Uenukukopako) and Maramena Vercoe for the Kohi sub region (Ngati Manawa).

The decision to train these three people, with costs paid for by the council was made by the council's Maori Committee.

During that meeting, the committee heard that the council's Ten Year Plan outlined steps to foster the development of Maori capacity in the council's decision-making processes.

This training sponsorship is in its second year and its purpose is to enhance knowledge of resource management and build the talent pool of Maori as hearing commissioners.

Final selection for the sponsorship is made by Maori Committee chairman Tai Eru.

As we are often involved with commissioner hearings over land and water it is critical we have Maori commissioners. Well done to those whanau for making the committiment to achieving training through the making Good Decisions program and well done To Bay of Plenty Regional Council for supporting Maori.

THE WHAT COMMITTEE?
