Tauranga City Council is considering how to attend to two bank slips in the last two weeks; the first at Cliff Road and the second at Yatton Park.
The slip at Cliff Road Reserve was of the bank beside the railway line on Dive Crescent, with earth falling down the hill.
First priority at the Yatton Park slip is to make the surrounding area safe.
It is a significant slip and will require some earthworks to address the cause and effect. How that work will be implemented will be worked through over the coming weeks.
The second slip is at Yatton Park and is likely to see trees removed at the top of the escarpment to reduce the weight on this area.
The long term implications for the area of park outside of the cordon will be addressed as these first steps are taken.
This information taken from the Tauranga City Council weekly bulletin for the week beginning Monday, July 11, published below.
City Waters
Water Supply:
- Water main renewal works on Maunganui Road between Nikau and Rata Street is now almost complete with some minor reinstatement left to do.
- Pipe laying is about to start at Seaview Road and Windsor Road.
Drainage
- Two reported sewer blockages attended to last week. These were local property incidents off Calypso Drive and Pacific View Road, Papamoa with no overflow to waterways.
- Repairs at Miriana Street stormwater outlet to improve erosion protection by patching and extending the rock gabion.
- Repairs to the damaged stormwater pipe in Aranui Drive are underway following on from a tomo in road and berm.
- Wastewater main replacement work in Vale Road from Landscape Road towards Grange Road continues with some minor disruption to traffic.
Stormwater Pollution:
- Friday morning's fire fighting action on Hull Road generated large amounts of water run-off which may have contaminated Pilot Bay. Water run-off from the fire fighting entered the harbour via the stormwater system, directly affecting the Port area. The contamination is not major but as a precaution we are advising people to stay out of the water in Pilot Bay the next 24 hours. Health warning signs have been installed at Pilot Bay.
Parks and Leisure
- New contractors started work on the city's sports fields from 1 July 2011. Recreational Services Ltd won the four year maintenance contract against some strong contenders. Their organisation brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the management of the city's sports fields and will be making themselves known to sport users over the coming months.
Letters will go out to coastal properties within the next couple of weeks to advise that we are gearing up for the next round of encroachment resolution work. Thanks to the cooperation of residents for two years in a row we have exceeded our target of reinstating 20-30 encroachments per year. Our first target area, Karewa Parade, is benefitting from a year of growth across the 34 encroachments on the conservation zone. The second target area, along Motiti Road and Taylor Road, is currently being planted across 39 encroachments. The next area for encroachment resolution will target properties starting at Papamoa Beach Road.

Two down and not many left after that, the state of affairs at TCC means the next stop will be the bottom of the bank and out with the next tide.
