Tauranga City Council supported organisations are showing their support for Tauranga City Aquatics Limited's proposed redevelopment of the Mount Hot Pools.
Western Bay of Plenty economic development organisation Priority One and tourism marketing organisation Tourism Bay of Plenty have both voiced their support.
The redevelopment of the Mount Hot Pools is the subject of much public criticism. Organisations are rallying to its aid however.
The proposed development would see a significant upgrade to the hot salt water pools and the establishment of a wellness centre.
It would cost $7.5 million and includes new change rooms, future-proofing of the 1980s pipe work, refurbishing the main pool area, increased disabled access, the addition of three new salt water sensation pools and two new children's freshwater pools.
The wellness centre would offer massage therapy and private bathing facilities.
In a statement issued to the press, Priority One states:
‘Priority One believes the region will see significant benefits from the proposed redevelopment, which will provide an all-weather, all-season attraction with spa facilities.
It has the ability to greatly enhance the hot pool experience for local visitors as well as provide a real draw card for national and international visitors outside the traditional peak periods of December and January.
We urge the local business community to support this exciting project.'
This sentiment is reflected in the comments of Tourism Bay of Plenty general manager Glenn Ormsby.
'Hanmer Springs, Polynesian Pools in Rotorua and Alpine Springs in Tekapo are proven case studies of the major benefits of such developments to an area,” says Glen.
'It's not just the Mount Hot Pools that will see increased profits, the economic benefit flows on to all the other surrounding businesses such as cafes, hotels, restaurants, retail stores and the like.”
TCAL CEO Tania Delahunty says the power of this redevelopment to boost tourism and the local economy cannot be underestimated.
'It is crucial that the public are aware of the facts of the redevelopments,” says Tania.
'Qualitative research conducted in 2008 that showed 70.3 percent of those surveyed supported the redevelopment.
'It is simply an improvement of what is already in place at the Mount Hot Pools, but the benefits are huge.”
She says the $7.5 million cost would not be met by ratepayers and instead the money would be borrowed, with TCAL to repay the loan and interest with the revenue generated by the redevelopment.
Tania says these future plans will ensure pool entry prices stay the same and that the opportunity to make the network entirely funded by user-fees a reality.

When Will They Read
Posted on 13-07-2011 12:37 | By tabatha
These people are not reading what people have said, unless they have other sites that support the Hot Pools development. At the present time Tauranga City Council, who will end up paying, just does not have money for the project. Also if a loan is taken out who has to place surety on it, TCC. Come on one and all speak up and those who want to spend listen please.
The full facts please
Posted on 13-07-2011 13:15 | By Inconvenient Truth
Could we have an upfront answer, maybe from Village PR, as to who will be responsible if insufficient profits are made to repay this loan? Will it be TCAL and its management, or will it be TCC ratepayers? I used to think the idea of a decent facility was great, but with the failed resource consent and the hiring of a PR company I'm thinking I can't see it succeeding. Doing very little now seems a great option because it would satisfy those who complain no matter what happens, and it would leave the bathers to swim and pay for their own recreation.

It's a pretty poor effort by Priority One & Tourism BOP. Surely there's a conflict of interest here given they both have funding support from TCC - TCAL's owner!
What an unreal farce!!

Will Tauranga City Aquatics Limited CEO Tania Delahunty please go back and READ the Commissioners' Decision, it's not to hard to understand by most folk, only a simple 2 letter word NO . Of course Priority One and the "local business community" will say they want this "this exciting project", after all it's money for them, so why don't they fund it ALL? 'It is crucial that the public are aware of the facts of the redevelopments,” says Tania, well they ARE, and the majority keep saying "We don't want a bar of it" It is crucial that the CEO Tania Delahunty is aware of the facts, and that is simple, THE COMMISSIONER RULED NO. So stop wasting TCAL/TCC money,(OUR money, and do the job you are paid to do,(with OUR money)
The Process
Posted on 13-07-2011 16:43 | By TCAL
There is a legitimate process that is currently being worked through. The next stage of that process is mediation on 19th July. TCAL is welcoming this opportunity to mediate as it continues to redraft its plans to address points made by the Independent Planning Commissioner in 2011 about the redevelopment's scale, height, impact on green space and parking.

The cost of the redevelopment project is $7.5 million and in an almost unheard of move, none of this money will come from rates. TCAL will repay the loan (and interest) with revenue generated by the redevelopment. These future plans will ensure pool entry prices stay the same and that the opportunity to make network entirely funded by user-fees is a reality. The conservative numbers show that this project adds up financially, reaps rewards for the entire Tauranga community and protects an iconic asset. TCAL is committed to supporting a community that swims by ensuring swimming is affordable and accessible and that people are equipped and motivated to swim. Hanmer Springs, Polynesian Pools in Rotorua and Alpine Springs in Tekapo are proven case studies of the major benefits of such developments to an area. It's not just the Mount Hot Pools that will see increased profits, the economic benefit flows on to all the other surrounding businesses such as cafes, hotels, restaurants, retail stores and the like. A thorough consultation process was conducted up to the initial hearing in 2009, including a purpose built website, a brochure drop to households, a staffed concept centre, road shows and meetings with stakeholders. Qualitative research conducted in 2008 showed 70.3% of those surveyed supported the redevelopment. The community project is also supported the council and local iwi.
Local Iwi support and liability?
Posted on 13-07-2011 18:10 | By Murray.Guy
The local Iwi support has always puzzled me, I think the ONLY submitter in support - yet the development as proposed further erodes the significance Mt. Maunganui (Mauao). i guess the same IWI that rejects the placement of a 'compass' on it's summit. Re the money: The ratepayers own the facility, the ratepayers will have the debt and liability. If the business case fails (for whatever reason) as did Route K reaching a 1/4 of that predicted, likewise Baypark, or has a reduced revenue, it is the ratepayers that will make up the difference - and that's a fact!
Survey of Support
Posted on 13-07-2011 19:43 | By TCAL
Qualitative research in 2008 showed that 70.3% of those surveyed supported the redevelopment. Also, 5.5% did not know how they felt about the redevelopment. This survey was based on the original plans, which are now being redrafted to address points made by the Independent Planning Commissioner in 2011 about the redevelopment's scale, height, impact on green space and parking.
Let them pay then
Posted on 13-07-2011 19:52 | By marama
Priority One should pay for the development and its ongoing maintenance since they want it. If they think its going to be so profitable, put their money where their mouth is. Ratepayers should note you help fund these people.
Talk about being up one anothers artz.

This is refurbished bullshit. The so called support has been elicited from TCC toadies Tourism BOP and Priority One both noted for a complete lack of acumen. They will have been directed to speak up by guess who ? and put in their tuppence worth as a PR exercise in futility.TCAL, TOURISM BOP, & PRIORITY ONE are all a waste of time and space lets get rid of all 3 in one go.Its stuff and nonsense like this that flushes them out.

Look at the Facebook page and then look at the Village PR link there. Already the previous current repair cost (let exclusively, not by competitive tender) has changed from the original $1-1.5 million they told us and now they say $1.5-1.7 million. A really good start! I wonder how many of the Facebook "likers" are stakeholders, in terms of being ratepayers and hence likely to be in the gun if the fanciful figures don't eventuate. Also where does the budget come from for Facebook and the offensive information offensive fromVillage PR?
Kronic perception problem

Hanmer Springs, Polynesian Pools in Rotorua and Alpine Springs in Tekapo are not Mount Maunganui, nothing like it. The unique aspect is that the Mount pools are 1 of 2 hot salt pools in the world, anyone can have massage rooms. Do you really expect to fill 10 massage rooms at a time? There will be no happy ending to these massage rooms if they go ahead. The fundamental flaw is there is nowhere for the extra customers to park.
Yea Right

I suppose these figures are from the same source that said ROUTE K, BAY-WAVE,THE ART GALLERY, SPEEDWAY, ETC, ETC,would be self funding and then proceed to adjust all the numbers to make it work. Its a shame all the finance companies have gone broke and these fine people have to stay working for rate-payer funded companies and can theorize with impunity, and not wind up in court with the other dreamers. TCAL what an absolute load of diatribe! The plain facts are that Tauranga/Mt Maunganui do not and have never attracted big numbers of tourists outside of Dec, Jan and Feb. Like it or not we are off the 'beaten tourist track'. You cannot liken the Mount to Rotorua or anywhere in the South purely for the fact that that is where the tourists flock to in great numbers. You only have to ask local accommodation providers how busy they are for how long to see that this area is not a highlight stop on a traveller's itinerary, we just don't have the passing trade to become wealthy tourism operators. Tourism has always struggled in this area and Tania's wellness centre will struggle along with the rest of the accommodation providers, tourism operators and retail outlets. I cannot believe that the retailers especially of Mount Maunganui would be happy to see so many camp sites disappear. The amount of money that must come off each and every one of those sites into the downtown eateries and shops on a daily basis over the summer could never be matched by someone paying a visit to a wellness centre! Yes the Mount camp is only really busy for 3 months but I bet that in that time the cash injection into the area would far exceed what they would make should the camp be replaced. If Tania gets her way and this goes ahead it will be to the detriment of a lot of local business. A wellness centre is not going to bring tourists flocking to the area! Tourism BOP I'm sure are all for it because most of their members would be struggling and they see any new draw card as something that might help them, clutching at straws people! I cannot imagine how this could possibly be a financial success when at the end of the day you will have to rely greatly on local support. The whole thing is just so wrong on so many different levels (the visual effect, loss of green space, parking, loss of camp sites, traffic congestion, debt) it is unbelievable that it has been allowed to get so far and had so much ratepayer funding thrown at it! Why is this centre not being put at Baywave where the infrastructure is already in place? If it's that good it shouldn't matter where it is. You are messing with an iconic part of town and the majority of us want it left as it is. Listen to the people Tania they're saying NO, you have no right to continue down this path when the majority of ratepayers don't want it and at the end of the day it is OUR money you are spending even though you say it's not going to cost ratepayers - that's just lala land.
update please

On announcing the long term closure of the pools, clear as mud TCAL CEO TD announced that the staff employed there would be put to good use in the community helping projects such as beach clean ups. maybe the PR company could give us, the public an update on how their time has been spent so far?

Posted on 13-07-2011 20:11 | By Tony Tony the truth hurts so PLEASE be gentle. I must say tho that over the last wee while I have become concerned about Murray. He sure as 'Wants to care'... 'Does care'... 'Expresses care'. But ... "STANDS" ~ "COMMITTED" ~ "PASSIONATE" in real life for 'The Citizens'??? Maybe - just maybe time will tell. In my book he sure deserves the chance to 'prove' his expressed commitment .. After all he is the "ONLY ONE" (TCC related) with the balls to show up in this excellent forum provided by 'Sun Live'. Now I must off back to 'the ward' ... -Citizens Monitoring Council-

there is no "BENEFIT" for the community as a whole, there maybe pockets that will receive a windfall as noted but overlall thre can not be any tourist bost to pay the bills that will rack up on this little beauty. In the end the debt is the ratepayers, in the end the bills (again) ar ehte ratepayers to front up for. That is how it is, the only thing missing here is the "truth".
SUPPORT FROM WHO
Posted on 16-07-2011 16:13 | By WOFTAM
The supporters so far are all on the payroll of TCC, hardly a "tick in the box" there, how about that they get someone independant and objective to take a look at it ... Oh they did ... The Indpeendant Commissioner on the Consent was a "RESOUNDING "NO" GET OUT OF HERE !!!". Seems this lot are a little slow on the uptake.
