Boobs on Bikes: councillor watch

The two Tauranga City Councillors who led the council opposition to Boobs on Bikes being granted a parade permit, Murray Guy and Bill Grainger, were both spotted on Devonport Road shortly before the parade rode by.

See video interview below with Tauranga City Councillor Bill Grainger about Boobs on Bikes.

They were photographed walking up the street at 11.40am - well after the parade's scheduled start time.

Murray and Bill organised the meeting in the council chambers earlier this week to hear the views of about 80 people who opposed the parade being held.

Both of them spoke against the parade at the extraordinary council meeting held earlier this week.

Interesting Councillors Guy and Grainger even went to the parade! If they were true to their rantings they would not have even attended! Very hypocritical.....

remember not all of us who protest such evil work can make it to protests and meetings. secondly we come from different worlds and if we are seen then words stsrt to fly in our direction. it is better we are not seen and we like to work from this annon position. if you can come up with an idea where we are not seen but can protest do let us know.

GOOD TIMES

End of the day the parade was a good laugh. I really enjoyed the entertainment offered by both the bare-chested ladies and by the efforts of the protestors. I hope it comes back next year and the protestors protest harder to improve the overall entertainment value of the event. Great value!

Which councillors attended?

Civic duty aside, it seems odd to attend an event you claim to be against.

Sorry....we didn't view the parade

Just to answer some of the comments made. Both Cr Murray Guy and myself went and viewed the route, before the parade started, to get an idea of the quantity, mix and some of the comments made by the crowd before it started......quite stunned at the number of younger generation present. Sorry to those who think otherwise, we both did not view the parade.

think???

To the protesters I did not attend the parade but one would think that stalling the parade for any length of time on the main road would just give more exposure, so while you are all dicking around thae boobs are on bikes in the town center for even longer than was intended Nice one

Loved the Protesters

Just to confirm what Councillor's Granger and Guy have stated, I attended myself and spoke to Councillor Guy as he walked back to the City Council building almost an hour before the parade started (Clearly not perves) While talking to Mr Guy, Councillor Granger was making his way back as well. I loved the people who protested, it made for an entertaining day. The freedom of Expression (Boobs on Bikes) were greeted by the freedom of speech (Protesters) Both had a right to be there and I found them both extremely entertaining. Both got their points across and of the 300 photos I took, at least 100 were the actions of the Protesters. Id like to see them both back next year. Question; Where were the truancy officers? I see Tauranga Boys, Tauranga Girls(?), Bethlehem College and Otumoitai College were well represented.

I watched the video, so there is no possibility of your position being misrepresented. You want to raise this to the National Parliament? How far out of touch are you actually? 100 years? 150 years? A high Court judge has ruled that MOST NZers are NOT offended by topless women. (He's right.) That doesn't mean that YOU can't be, but please don't waste our time and money pursuing something that is NOT a problem. A small minority of the popuation may have some reservations about it. It is a Democracy; they have a right to their opinion. They do NOT have a right to disrupt something which has occurred within the Laws of the land, especially when the majority of the population endorse those Laws. There are acceptable channels for Democratic protest; placing chains across the road is not one of them. Anyone who is likely to be offended by such a parade should stay home. I sincerely hope that many people will remember the actions of certain Councillors (who are supposed to set an example and uphold the Democratic process) when the approaching Council elections are upon us. I certainly will.

You backed the wrong horse. Your cynical attempt to get votes from the God Squad and the narrow-minded lowest common denominator of our Community has backfired. The numbers are way against you and it serves you right. You have done some good work but this may well overshadow it. Stop wasting time and money on non-issues and get back to making the process of local government more transparent and accountable. Although there is an old adage that no publicity is bad publicity, it is possible to take grandstanding too far. We'll find out at the next elections.

Your post just gives me the creeps. A shadowy anonymous figure without the courage to even post here under a name. "If we are seen then words start to fly in our direction" Ever asked yourself WHY that might be? No, just happy to stay in darkness and observe the "evil" being done by the rest of us. I have an idea where you can be unseen but still protest, as you requested. Just vote for Councillors and MPs who support your own twisted, narrow-minded, undemocratic world view. But don't be surprised if they seem to change their minds once your vote has assisted them into power. That's politics; the art of persuading people you agree with them. (Whether you actually do or not...) Or, go and live somewhere else. There ARE societies where the Church trumps the State. No more "waiting and watching". You can parade your belief secure in the knowledge that everyone else agrees with you and no words will come your way. Everybody is good and nobody does evil. Believe me, few here would miss you.
