Mayor’s election spend scrutinised

Whakatane Mayor Tony Bonne is under investigation for overspending in his 2010 election campaign.

He came forward when he realised he had spent more than $900 over the $20,000 spending cap for his campaign.

Whakatane Mayor Tony Bonne has admitted to spending more than the capped amount in the 2010 local government elections.

The spending cap is enforced to make sure large financial backing for a candidate does not create an unfair advantage during elections.

Tony's case is being investigated by police with a legal review taking place in Wellington.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen has been in charge of the case since it was brought to his attention last year.

He says a completed file of the investigation has been sent to Bay of Plenty police headquarters and is now being reviewed in Wellington.

Bay of Plenty Police communications manager Jacky James says it's critical proper procedures are followed given the nature of the alleged offence.

What forced him to come forward was it a case of own up or be dobbed in? Why has it taken police 8months to complete an investigation. What is the sanction and what is the penalty for this offence.
