Zespri releases licenses to grow gold

Just how valuable Zespri's gold kiwifruit G3 really is has been made clear by today's announcement that New Zealand growers have paid a minimum of $254,150 in a tender process for the right to grow one hectare of the fruit.

This comes a day after Zespri announced that its lucrative new gold kiwifruit varieties G3 (Zespri SunGold) and G9 (Zespri Charm), may be growing illegally in China and a police investigation is underway in New Zealand to establish how the plants got there.

The two varieties are subject to plant variety rights owned by Zespri in New Zealand and other jurisdictions and can only be legally grown under licence.

Today, Zespri allocated orchardists in New Zealand the right to grow a further 400 ha G3 following a tender process which attracted 938 bids, of which 235 were successful. The average size of new plantings is 1.7 ha.

Licence revenue from the allocation of 400 ha will be approximately $98m exclusive of GST.

Validation of bids, ranking and allocation of licence has occurred earlier than expected due to an improved grower database system, Zespri says.

This means growers will know the outcomes of their bids earlier than anticipated, but do not need to change their funding plans, the company says.

So they first have to buy/own/lease the land... then they have to pay a minimum of a quarter of a million $ to be allowed to plant one (1) hectare? Wow... what a racket? Them there are huge numbers? Mind boggling. I remember when the kiwifruit started taking off bigtime in the 70's, all of the spare flat land got turned into KWF orchards. I used to go gliding up Oropi road at an airstrip that became a KWF orchard.... now it makes sense why Zespri is chucking a tanty over the Chinese crops... &BTW Anarchy, the Chinese don't 'copy' anything... they merely 'reverse engineer' LOL... there is a difference (supposedly).... Not to mention that the first 'Kiwifruit' seeds came from China (Chinese Gooseberries) ... The highlight of visiting my nana in Hamilton when I was a kid, was raiding her Chinese Gooseberry and feijoa trees

Yeah, it probably really riles them that New Zealand stole their fruit, renamed it after their annoying pet name, and then sell it back to them at inflated prices. They'll be making that overhyped honey next.
