Tauranga Art Gallery is reporting a surplus and a visitor number increase of 9000 people in the 2010/2011 financial year.
Gallery director Penelope Jackson says the visitor numbers increased from 47,539 in the previous year to 56,000 – and this has helped to achieve a surplus.
Tauranga Art Gallery director Penelope Jackson.
'Having surplus means we had to be fiscally aware and we've had to reduce staff and a few other things like that.
'It's a combination of repeat and new (visitors), but at the moment a lot are visitors to the country for the Rugby World Cup.
'It changes, so over the summer you get a lot of people who are holidaying and during the winter you do get repeat visitors.”
Penelope believes another reason for the gallery's success is a new website.
'We've updated our website and it's more interactive. In the last year we had over 68,000 page views.
'I don't have the figures from last year, but it's probably double.”
She says it's valuable as they have interactive schools with teachers visiting the site.
'Another measure of success is the programmes we offer around the exhibitions we have, and one of them is our education programme – 9500 children visited in that (2010/2011) financial year.
'They all came on the Art Bus, which we find sponsorship for.
'No-one has to pay for that bus. So no school and no children are left out.”
The Tauranga Art Gallery is a not-for-profit organisation and relies on council for 80 per cent of funding.
At its annual presentation, Penelope showed other examples of the gallery's success.
'We have a whole lot of targets that we met and in terms of success, one of the things I guess is the quality of exhibitions and we actually offered 27 exhibitions in the 2010/2011 financial year.”
Those exhibitions included Reuben Paterson's Whakapapa; Get down on your knees and Frances Hodgkins' works from Dunedin Public Art Gallery.
'An exhibition we have put together was the retrospective of Lynley Dodd and that was hugely popular.
'That's now gone on to Rotorua Museum and now it's at Te Manawa at Palmerston North, and then it's going to continue to around the country.”
Penelope says this exhibition is another major success story because it's not just putting Lynley Dodd's name on the map, but it also gets Tauranga Art Gallery out there and inspires people who haven't heard of the Tauranga Art Gallery.
'We're not even four years of age yet, so we're still very new.”
She says a successful art gallery is beneficial for the community.
'It means that we are well and truly established in the community.
'I think like any new organisation you have that initial period where you're finding your audience and trying to offer a balance.
'We have exhibitions that bring in families and then we have other exhibitions that will bring in photographers and people interested in current affairs.”

Love the art gallery and regularly stroll through, yes paying on the way, so glad to hear it is turning things around. The current Graham Percy exhibition is something else, too.
Your Joking...surely

Hahaha "putting Lynley Dodd's name on the map" what a stupid statement.... what cocoon has Penelope Jackson been living in... Lynley Dodd is know worldwide, it is only the white elephant Tauranga Art Gallery that isn't known....... outside of the few that think they have an exclusive handle on "culture"....and expect everyone to fund their pleasure. The surplus is only a surplus because of 80% council funding.

Great to see our much loved Art Gallery moving into the black. Forget the naysayers like CC8, they are truly in the minority! We are so fortunate to hve a quality gallery in the CBD - there is not much else there to provude a bit of culture, and draw crowds. Keep up the good work, Penny and Co.

Great news on the art gallery.....and for those of you that care that Tauranga does not continue to slip into a beautiful city with no life in it....make sure you vote in some people with vision and decent business sense in the next election...we desperately need it
What is a surplus?
Posted on 27-09-2011 22:46 | By Gee Really
Maybe a bit more thought needed. If a surplus means that ratepayers no longer give 800,000 a year to the gallery, and there's a little bit left over, then I'd call that a surplus. If council still subsidises the Gallery then I don't call that a surplus, just less of a loss. Now if all those gallery lovers put there hands in their pockets and paid the same admission as a movie, that would be a good start.

Such Venom and Fear
Posted on 28-09-2011 12:57 | By DRich
Where does all the anti-art venom come from in this debate, I wonder. Last time I visited, none of the art on display did anything other than sit there allowing my personal take and interpretation on it. Yes, it is less of a loss, rather than a profit, but still a good step. Trust me, as a rate-paying art lover who still insists on paying every gallery visit, as well, I'd like nothing more than this local jewel to be out of reach of the anti-culture moaners, and will do my bit to have it so. As for paying movie price??? What kind of daft, irrelevant random figure is that? What is the connection between a 2hr movie and a comparatively brief gallery visit? Pro-rata, on the other hand my typical 20 min visit would be about $2 - less than I 'donate' now, so if I have everyone's permission I'll go with that figure instead

If ma rates money is being wasted here by paying most of the bills for the place then there is no profit mate! 200 people a day going in there, that means ya need a 1000 a day to break even, crikky dick mate that means all of Tauranga goes in a 100 days before all the bills are paid, like not hope of that mate, if they like it so much then increase the price x5 + they will not notice or care they will just pay, then I don't have to pay anything. Got it mate!
council

I think the gallery should be user pays not by the council. Council should pay for our needs not wants. If you want something you pay.

Ratepayers money is "income" and even through the debt keeps going up everythign is wonderful, lovely and nice. We are all doing just soooo well. NOT!

I would have thought an icon as wonderful as an art gallery would have kept you enlightened for at least as long as a 90 minute movie (also art in many peoples eyes) that you have to pay for unsubsidised. But my real issue has nothing to do with fear and loathing, just a desire to see the gallery honour its original commitment to the people of Tauranga. That was for a one off ratepayer contribution of one million dollars, with no mention of an ongoing 800,000 a year which is what it's ended up as.

They said it would be "community funded" annually, of course what they did not say is what exactly that meant, truth is there never was any chance of it being anything other than as it is, RATEPAYERS are PAYING all BILLS for EVER and EVER until. I know this is so because we the ratepayers keep on voting for "politicians" who do what is needed to get votes, nothing else.
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE TRUTH?
Posted on 29-09-2011 11:19 | By MASSA KISSED
Surely promising to only ask for $1 million "once" and then forgetting to well stop taking more money each and every week for years after that should just stop right?
THE TRUTH HAS LONG SINCE LEFT THE ROOM, THE DISTRICT ...

Like the Gallery getting funds from TCC to lease 5 or 6 carparks from the TCC. How many staff are there at anyone time ?
Abstract Art brains at work here mate
Posted on 29-09-2011 22:15 | By Hebegeebies
Whoopee Doo 56000 people @ $2 a head if Art Gallery(that is a misnomer) is very lucky returns $112000 per annum. Art gallery receives a subsidy of $1000000 from the dipsticks at TCC so by my calculation that is a loss of $878000 give or take. Get the picture excuse the pun.It is very naughty for the Art Gallery spin fairy stories leave that to the Library.WOFTAM
ALL ABSTRACT!
Posted on 30-09-2011 17:07 | By WORMTONGUE
The "art brain" is missing many "real" pieces in what it thinks or sees. Hebegeebies, it is more like $1.70/hd and the loss is 792% of income, in other words for $1 in means $8 "MORE" goes out. There can not be a profit in that. Of course knowing how TCC works the thre will be a lot of costs not passed over to the Arty Gallery like rent, admin and so on. How can $888,000 "MONEY OUT" be called a "profit"??? That kind of BS can only happen in TCC right.
PAY THEM FOR
Posted on 02-10-2011 14:53 | By ANNA KISSED
Say for every dollar in means lets say 33% is then allowed to be paid out in wages, then staff would be motivated to earn right, the same concept should apply to the Pools also, then lets see how many of the 150 staff there are left after a couple of weeks.
OUTRAGEOUS FURTUNE!

Or is it absolutely fabulous? I think the former as the money is clearly rolling out the door at a great pace of knotts and as it is all someone elses money no one seems to worry to much about it.
