The Arataki Community Centre's opening today is a celebration of a community that refused to take no for an answer.
Community members approached the Tauranga City Council in 2009 after funding for the centre was taken out of its Ten Year Plan.
About 300 people attended the opening of the Arataki Community Centre.
They succeeded in getting the funding reinstated, marking the beginning of a consultative process between the council and community members over where the centre should go, and what it should contain.
Some of the community thinking, like its desire to place the new centre near the much maligned and graffiti-ed skate bowl, puzzled councillors.
But the community view prevailed and the centre is located in the middle of the local community, on Grenada Park, next to the skate bowl and close to Baywave, and Bayfair.
'It's right in the hub,” says community board member Paul Bennett.
'The skateboard bowl is just across the grass. Hopefully we will be able to get the youth involved in the centre, and they get a bit of respect as they get used to the facility.”

Arataki Primary and St Thomas Moore students singing at the opening.
Mount Maunganui police also support the community centre being near the skate bowl.
The police describe Arataki as ‘Socially deprived with a high penetration of youth and elderly people, two groups that traditionally don't have a strong voice on community issues.'
Police spend a disproportionate time in the Arataki area compared with other Mount Maunganui and Papamoa suburbs, with the skate bowl being the cause of some of it as a gathering point for young people.
Paul Bennett is one of about a dozen community representatives involved in the process since they first approached the council.
'I was asked to go along and meet the council, and here we are today,” says Paul.
'It's been a long process.
'I have learned a lot. I have never been involved with the council.
'It was such and eye opener and I learned a lot. It's been great just learning the different processes and how they work. Listening a lot and having a bit of a voice too.”

The YMCA set up a play area for children at the Arataki Community Centre opening.
Today's official opening began at 2.30pm, attended by a crowd of about 300 including the Mayor Stuart Crosby, councillors, local schools Arataki Primary and St Thomas Moore, iwi and community representatives.
Mai FM are supporting the event.
The $3.25 million community centre is also the council's first design and build project, built by Marra Construction.
The new centre replaces the demolished Arataki hall and amenities block on Granada Park which is accessed off Monowai Street.

CITY PARTNER INDULGENCES

Murray said that the cost was $500k over the top for it, then there is all the tendering of the odd bits and pieces all over the place like carpet, sound systems, cameras, PC's and a whole lot more to boot, then there is a lovely management contract as well .. the madmess never stops.
Small Correction ...

I secured a quote from a local 'commercial D&B company' based on the same original brief. Subject to final fitout requirements it represented a minimum saving to the ratepayer of $350,000 but up to $500,000. Unfortunately the majority mindset had (has) little appetite for fiscal responsibility, especially with an election approaching and Ward Candidates involved. MASSA KISSED is correct in that your rates dollar is subsidizing all manner of activities and ego's in 'eye watering' amounts - and it's forever and escalating!

If they can control some of the maori youths at the skate park. Several of whom destroyed my 2 year old sons scooter helmet and then threatened to assault my partner when she complained. Mind you, we've been there a few times and that was the first trouble.
Well Done TCC

Good on you TCC, for once councillors listened to the community and not the nay sayers, the community has got something that they can be proud of, the centre is multiple functional and looks great, and no I don't live in arataki but do not begrudge my rates being spent on something that will help identify this city as being great.

I don't think so, it is more a case of randomly throw the money at it and hope the heck something useful comes out of it. Will be waiting a long time on that one for sure.
Cr Guy's so-called quote
Posted on 02-10-2011 14:39 | By Gee Really
So a politician gets a quote at the same time as a tender is going on. Why didn't Cr Guy get this company to tender properly? Can anyone pop along to their councillor and quote for a contract? Nice one. Anyone can say I could have done it for this or that. Hey, maybe even a million cheaper than the Cr Guy figure, but it doesn't mean anything because its not binding. I don't like the idea of politicians getting involved in tendering. Maybe Cr Guy could give a copy to Sunlive so we can all see it, together with the name of the firm. Guess they had to spend quite a bit of their own money if it's a properly worked out quote. But the ongoing spending on activities and staff is a different story and I agree that is an unfair ongoing burden for ratepayers.
Wreck it then deck it out as new

What a horrible pigs breakfast and it has cost TCC ratepayers well over $3m -color shape form style nothing is right about it.What are police doing standing in front of it have they responded to a 111 and is that pre opening graffiti all over the building already.Hard to tell.
Another TCC handout

It looks awful and cost twice what it should have. No Arataki community input by personal fundraising or personal endeavour or working bees.Drones demanded a finished product and got it from TCC ratepayers.Ongoing annual operating costs will no doubt be met by Council.$millions down the gurgler on this little doozie.
GIVE IT TO THEM ....

Green backs I mean, at least they are worth bugger all now so that won't add to the TCC debt as much.
Centre itself is bad enough but what is this monstrosity
