The Waipa District Council's decision to put $1 million towards the Cambridge-based Home of Cycling Trust isn't prompting Bay of Plenty Regional Council chairman John Cronin to reach for his wallet.
'I think it's absolutely fabulous that the councils in the Waikato are supporting it,” says John.
'It's part of our Ten Year Plan considerations so we are looking at it.
'A possible obstacle for us in that funding is that the funds are to be spent outside our region, but we will have to look at it in a broader context.”
The Waipa District Council decision follows confirmation on September 14 of the keystone $6m investment from Waikato Regional Council, which resulted in Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC) naming the Waikato Bay of Plenty Home of Cycling as the successful tenderer and putting up $7m.
'We have a lot of pressure on funds,” says John, who notes this makes it harder for the council to support it, despite him being able to see its value.
'Whether the value comes up in the ranking order we will have to wait and see.”
In May, cyclists and supporters across the central North Island deluged the regional council and Tauranga City Council with more than 800 submissions seeking $4 million from the Bay of Plenty for the $29.5 million Cambridge velodrome project.
The Waikato BOP Home of Cycling Trust proposal includes a velodrome at Cambridge built to Union Cycliste Internationale standards, the world acclaimed mountain bike trails at Whakarewarewa Forest in Rotorua, a new BMX track at Cambridge and access to roads with low traffic volumes for road cycling.
'We haven't been asked to fund or had any submissions to fund mountain biking or anything at Rotorua,” says John.
'We've just been asked to fund in generic terms.
'We haven't been asked for anything that is specific in our region, though they say that there is an intent – that is not in their application.”
The National Cycling Centre of Excellence is expected to open by late-2013.

But what about our wallets? John Cronin can feel free to make a personal contribution to this cycle facility in the Waikato, but he shouldn't give any of our ratepayers money. We have enough that needs doing in our own area. The answer should be a straight no.

Still fresh as in the memory is the little jaunt to CHCH not so long ago to join in the party circuit down there for "NO GOOD REASON" at all and the fact that "ONLY" should have been paid personally, but OH NO that did not happen, into the public purse we go for all and sundry to all have a little party session in CHCH. bad behaviour then and nothing changed now! PS a lynch mob here would be to kind!

Happy to dip into the public coffers at will when "want to" even having a spend up over the hill as and when want to and the rules will of course bend any which way to do so. Seems nothing is different to the Jazz funding con and other scams around the place.

Don't know why he is even thinking about it, should not be allowed to keep the job for the CHCH free for all dip into teh public purse for the "Needy party goers" trip a few months back! Would not have been so bad if it was picnic baskets, at least I could a had a couple to.
RECYCLING A BETTER OPTION

This long time pensioner should have been sent out to pasture decades ago based on the level of "milking" the system going on covertly in CHCH!

Repay the Christchurch junket money to ratepayers and exorcize any thought of funding a Waikato Cycling Center from your 'brain' and we will all be happy .Pay back the $7000 now we have not forgotten it and you should be shamefaced about it still.

Mate give it up, the silly grin means he knows he has got away with that wonderful little CHCH party scam where we are all fleeced like hapless sheep to the slaughter! I do think that the $$$ to pay back should be nearer $10,000, but WGAF
ON YA BIKE MATE.

Best result is send him packing to Cambridge, one way ticket (cycle only) and no party vouchers allowed!
What part of NO don't you understand

Unfortunately this cycle comes round more than once a month and sooner or later this BRC turkey will throw BOP ratepayers money at it. Just a question of how many $millions.
THE PART I DO NOT UNDERSTAND?

Is when he is going to spend his own money and give our back!
I WOULD GIVE HIM THE BIKE

The little cycle just keeps going around in circles sadly for the rest of us, when we really need is a straight and narrow track for this clown, one way out of out of here!
A PENNY FOR YA THOUGHTS

I think the best cycle for him is a "PENNY" farthing! would be of the right time warp for this relic of the past.
