Downer NZ Ltd is awarded the stage one contract for Tauranga's Waterfront development.
Work on sprucing up The Strand is expected to start in February on the pedestrian and cycle path that will run along the seawall from Dive Crescent to Wharf Street.
The first stage of the walkway is expected to be completed by Easter 2012.
A not to scale plan of the waterfront development.

The second part of the stage one work, which involves renovation of the Edgewater Fan area, completing the walkway, and the creation of two green spaces in the central and southern reclamation areas, are expected to be completed by July 2012.
Downer New Zealand Limited was awarded the contract following a lowest price negotiated tender process.
The Tauranga City Council decided to go ahead with the ‘basic upgrade' of The Strand in October after obtaining resource consent to a much more involved and expensive plan.
Councillors decided against the $20 million scheme after Duarne Lankshear from Priority One, suggested the council sprinkle The Strand with commercial leases to offset costs.
The redevelopment is being paid for out of $500,000-$600,000 carried forward from the new defunct project to rebuild Coronation Pier.

The ratepayer again, I am sure that the offical plan is to sooner or later complete the whole plan at anywhere from $20-32m, this is just the start. Hints are there as it is noted above that there is consent for it all, just doing a bit for now ...

This will be a great start to the new year and thank goodness something is finally being done about the disastrous use of the Tga Waterfront. A waterfront is for people not cars. With regards to the bigger plan, hopefully that will also happen, in time as funds become available, i for one want something that my children and their children can enjoy for years to come. Its all to easy to only think of me, myself and I

Just when I began to think the feet were back on the ground TCC whips back on the scene to spend up large again Money no object mentality still reigns supreme at City Hall and another Xmas dog is on the way.

you say: "Its all to easy to only think of me, myself and I" but just before that you said: I for one want something that my children etc etc" Well if you want it, then pay for it, or organise a group and a committee and fundraise some money and go down there with a shovel or a paint brush and do something about it! Instead, you are happy to force other people to pay for your wish list - its much easier that way - to sit at home and put pressure on immoral councillors to do the hard graft for you. This is the kind of attitude that got the entire country in a mess. Council and government being bullied by groups to force others to pay for things they want. There used to be a fantastic childs playground at memorial park that was funded and built by citizens (rotary or Lions) and who wanted the same things as you, but they were the old fashioned kind of Kiwi who got things done by mutual consent and cooperation (its called community spirit) determination, hard work, and a desire to make the city a better place for their families. Successive councils and governments have STOLEN these admirable qualities from a couple of generations and now all it seems you must do is plead a NEED or a DESIRE, and some do-gooder will take it on as a project and FORCE others to pay for it - The ability to serve the community by donations and a sacrifice of time, money and skills has been destroyed by these do-gooders to the point where true community spirit is almost extinct and the population almost helpless to do stuff themselves without council or government doing it for them via the immoral use of force - its a tragedy of the highest degree and people - like dreamy1 - have no idea of the immorality of their demands, and will no doubt be indignant at my accusations.
Tenders

Did TCC ask for tenders for this job or was it just handed to one of their "preferred contractors" ? This type of major council project should go to open tender and not be handed out to anyone. It should have gone to the company that offered the best price.
