Works on Tauranga's waterfront project are underway with Mayor Stuart Crosby turning the first sod from the high seat of a digger.
It was a pro-forma sod turning, with Stuart quipping that he would like to have dug the hole a little deeper – to bury 30 years of plans of previous waterfront projects.
Mayor Stuart Crosby breaks ground on the waterfront walkway.
The first stage, which involves a 5m wide brushed concrete walkway from Dive Crescent to a point opposite Wharf Street, is expected to be completed by Easter.
The shoreward side of the walkway will also include a grass strip of similar width between the walkway and the car park.
Eventually the walkway is planned to continue past the Edgewater Fan on The Strand to the harbour side board walk.
The latter stages of the project are going out for public consultation with the Tauranga City Council's Ten Year Plan.
Stuart Crosby says a final decision is expected to be made by the council in May or June.
The project underway is more modest than the multimillion dollar waterfront rebuild the council succeeded in obtaining resource consent for, but Stuart says 'It's a start”.
He hopes once completed the rebuild will entice people back to the central city, something he says the council is aware it needs to achieve.
'When we allowed shopping centres in the suburbs we knew it would have a negative impact,” says Stuart.
'It is a major step. It's always been the way, as a city we have turned our backs on our greatest asset – the waterfront.”

So Stuart says " He hopes once completed the rebuild will entice people back to the central city, something he says the council is aware it needs to achieve." Does REMOVING 100s of carparks in this same area entice folk back in, or keep them away?????? You can't have it both ways, typical TCC nonsense yet again!
Bury 30 years worth of plans?

Mayor Stuart Crosby would have been involved with council for the majority of those 30 years of planning. In nominating assets, do people come downtown for the waterfront or the shopping and commerce. Maybe therein lies the asset of attraction and the waterfront may be a bonus that keeps them there longer.
waste of money

Why is it that this council cant see the real potential of the water front ? ... it is prime real estate yet they have car parks now they want a path, no body uses what is there already .. the area should be developed into board walks with eateries, cafes and specialty shops .. such a waist of a prime location
Waterfront

Forget about the BS your been told about bringing people back to the CBD Stuart. The best, cheapest and only way is to give our customers the free parking they and we so need and deserve in the city centre.Monuments don't bring customers. The development will only bring deaths by drownings or trains if we are to have the people the council have predicted down at the waterfront.Haven't Kiwi Rail told us there are going to be more trains running past the area? Its the most dangerous area in the country for an events centre or children's playground but be on the councils head when it happens.
ALL GREAT

But no car parks any where to be seen? So exactly how long will it take to get people back into the CBD ... like how long is a piece of string ...

Too little, too late. Despite best intent from all, I believe the CBD will continue to struggle. The landscape has changed. Internet shopping, internet business, email etc means that we no longer need to visit the CBD. Furthermore we now demand all season air conditioned comfort, security guards, background music, free entertainment and parking etc. THe CBD cannot possibly provide these. With due respect to all, I do not enjoy 'dining' on the strand with diesel vehicles, drunken youth, weather variances, trains, parking tickets, all added extras to the menu! Things have changed TCC. I believe the CBD will continue to decline despite some frilly edges being put on the moth-eaten blanket.

Well said Diva. How many single occupancy vehicles do we see everyday filled with overweight and unhealthy citizens? heaps. it is shameful. Take a leaf from Copenhagen: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cycling_in_Copenhagen
