Protest over rates rise launched

A Facebook page protesting Tauranga City Council's decision to double the water charge has 108 friends a week after being created with its creators hoping to gather more support before moving on to the next phase of protest.

Colleen Gourlay set the page up with a friend who has a similar page.

'We were just going to let it run for a couple of weeks and see how many people we have got and then either visit red square, or start a petition.

'We don't know yet, but we are going to do something,” says Colleen.

It's a hot topic with Tauranga ratepayers, given the issue's history.

A previous council held a referendum on water meters, the vote was ‘no', but the council went ahead anyway.

'Now they want to double the water rate. We are paying enough in water rates for that sort of thing,” says Colleen.

'It's amazing what you can do on Facebook; if you use it the right way you can reach quite a few people.”

One of the page's friends in Tauranga City Councillor Murray Guy who says social media have become more involved in community/council issues.

He noticed the involvement of social media over the successful public opposition to the council's proposal to charge for free fiction and non-fiction library books.

Murray also got a lot of public feedback through social media on the Boobs on Bikes issue.

'This one has built on the previous two,” says Murray.

'It's a sign of a changing medium for voicing protest.

'I think one of the reasons people are attracted to it is it is unedited; it provides an opportunity to express an opinion without a third party, be it like a meeting chairman or newspaper editing, abbreviating it, cutting off.

'It's going to require people in public office, and staff, to re-think their whole approach.”

What about Baypark/Speedway $5million Cr Guy?

Posted on 06-03-2012 09:07 | By Gee Really

Still wondering why Cr Guy supported the Baypark $5million "loan" and the Council buying a Speedway business??? As for this water issue, it seems to be one of either user pays or everybody pays (through rates). Personally I think the fixed charge should stay the same at $25 a year and the units used charge only increase to a maximum of inflation. Raising the fixed charge to $50 directly contradicts the point of these meters being forced on us. in the first place.

Well im in a middle of a very touchy subject as the counicl would put it, The council tried to do a 3 monthly bills but that stopped and now they have gone back to 6 monthly, now they want to increase the water rates what the hell next. They cant make up there mind what they want to do, I think its about time we got voted on a new counicl someone that knows what they are doing unlike the bunch of muppets in there at the moment

Mismanagement Again

Another case of mismanagement by TCC council and staff. An easy way, so they think, to collect more money from overburdened ratepayers. Why wasn't action taken when the deficit was first noticed ? I agree the fixed rate should stay at $25 per year and the unit charge should depend on the annual usage per houes hold. We have a water bore for garden use which has more than paid for itself over 8 years. Our council water uasage is therefore pretty minimal. Water is an essential to living so the charge should be kept to an absolute minimum. TCC - Don't turn it into an easy way to help balance the books. You and previous councils have not taken any notice of ratepayers wishes, start taking notice now or suffer the consequences.

Rate protest overdue

It has been brewing for a long time. The wasteful, negligent, imprudent, undemocratic, crony and parasitic dealings of ALL local councils (TCC, WBoDC, Env. C., Regional C. plus their double dipping 'enterprises' like TCAL or TCVL) need urgent scrutiny. Nothing short of a full and comprehensive investigation will suffice. Bravo to Colleen Gourlay. Interesting topic, Tauranga never paid extra for their water till we joined up with the Mount who always had to pay a water charge. The council said then that everyone at Mount and Tauranga would be suplied with enough water for a family of 2 audults and 2 childern at no charge. I have never had a free water bill since even though there is only 2 adults in there 70ties in our home . I suspect another council rip off.

Right on with that, but I would have to say it is well past the idea of "suspect another Council ripoff" in fact one would have to say that this little gem has been in play for years and of course once in they just rack it up year after year. Bottom line of it is that it is a desperate attempt to try and hide the real rate rises that are about to level us all soon for the 2013 year.

This TCC lot has it coming. Every time a coconut as they try to screw ratepayers by flying under the radar. Most times the locals put up with it and it is about time we had a little bit of off with their heads stuff.WTF
