Positive outlook for stadium

Two sets of financial figures presented with Tauranga City Venues Ltd's half yearly results caused some confusion at Monday's city council projects and monitoring committee meeting.

TCVL is the CCO that runs Baypark speedway, the TECT Arena and the catering business at the arena.

In the six months under review TCVAL has purchased the speedway business from the previous promoter, bought the catering business and taken up the operation of the arena which opened in August.

The two sets of figures represent the CCO's statement of intent before and after those events occurred, says TCVL CEO Irvin McSweeney.

'That would have been our last statement of intent made before we purchased the speedway business and before we purchased the catering business.

'That financial statement is really quite outdated.”

The profit and loss accounts for the six months to December 2011 in the meeting agenda present a gloomier picture showing a net loss of $834,555.40.

Figures on the report delivered to councillors at the meeting present a far more optimistic picture.

The actual and projected income until June 2012 shows the stadium management $203,384 in profit, and lift of some $300,000 from an overall loss of $191,616 for the six months to December 2011.

The loss comprised -$134,725 for the speedway and -$167,992 for the stadium head office.

In the six months to June, the speedway performance is turned round to produce a total operating profit of $110,000, but the stadium head office is still in deficit of $19,000.

The last page of the presented summary, actual and projected income to June 2012 shows the speedway in deficit of -$24,725, and the stadium head office deficit at -$186,992.

The total operating profit is achieved by adding an expected operating profit from the caterer of $342,149, plus $72,952 from the arena.

As well as the pressure of buying and grappling with the management of the new businesses, the CCO also had to cope with the vagaries of an extremely wet peak holiday season.

'It's probably without doubt the most demanding and difficult time TCVL has had in its short history,” says Irvin.

The main financial drag was the speedway. It started the season on the back foot with the normally well attended fireworks night on November 5, cancelled because of the dotterels in the oiled bird facility next door. Then there were two or three rain-outs.

'We can't really get that income back even by scheduling extra events,” says Irvin.

'If we get a good run through to the end of the season it will certainly bring us back to even stevens with regard to the speedway side of the business. We had a fantastic night last Saturday night.

'That was the main weakness in terms of financial returns. The head office costs which is really us referring to the stadium and where our offices are, we expected that to run as a slight loss and it is pretty much.

'But what I also said is the arena is running ahead of budget and we expect that to continue.”

The profit and loss account show TCVL received a Tauranga City Council community subsidy of CC subsidy of $254,500.

If it was a good stadium...

As a ratepayer I don't mind paying for a decent sports facility, but Baypark is an embarrassment. Speedway and field sports are not compatible. Is the mayor a speedway fan? I thought I saw a photo of him as a driver but not too sure. The mayor has certainly needed to use ratepayer funds (ie, my money) to fund speedway capital and operational expenses. Has any auditing body investigated this seemingly conflict of interest?

The catering side of the business is bound to make a profit if people keep buying at the exorbitant prices charged.( Not that I think they will) Especially when the security guards remove everything including water bottles from paraplegics. $7.50 for a bottle of ginger beer!!! Which you can get at the supermarket under $2.

Where does the $5million loan fit in

With interest on a $5million dollar loan plus interest on the unknown purchase price of the Speedway business and caterers likely to be about $500,000 a year, how does that fit into the projected "profits"? Plus what rates money (if any) is going into the Baypark complex each year?

my only comment is how on earth can figures get misread mixed up etc???? sounds dodgey to me I love Baypark and think it could be a huge asset to the community if it was run by professionals and it was a proper stadium not just a half this and a halfa that

C'mon guys isn't that a trifle optomistic

All been on the magic mushrooms have we. No wonder the figures are confusing with two sets of books creatively crafted no doubt. What on earth would the punters say if they got a look at the real financials.Get off the grass and stop spindoctoring.

$7.50 for a bottle of Gingerbeer. I wouldn't buy it on principle and I would make sure I ate before I went.

Hotchin, Bryers, and many more, they all do it, if we trust shady shysters, this is the result, I just wish for once someone would cut the crap, and tried for once to be honest, but I cannot see it happening, all we will keep getting fed is bureucratic facts and figures, when all we want, is to be told honestly, that the entire place is a dog!!!(actually I would rather have my dog) and then put a realistic plan in place to limit ratepayers losses and move on.

whats left

Posted on 14-03-2012 15:32 | By tonyb1

Well only two things left to buy at baypark and that is the steamers and security, and why but catering and speedway when they were struggling for the last two years, maybe this latest bad season would have seen them beg to surrender their contracts, maybe only the TCVL board could address that, I suppose the local buisness's down the mount can blame Rena and the weather on the slow run in custom and get a TCC community subsidy to help pay their bills or short fall

Subsidy ..

Posted on 14-03-2012 22:35 | By Murray.Guy

"The profit and loss account show TCVL received a Tauranga City Council community subsidy of CC subsidy of $254,500." This relates solely to the new TECT Arena Sports Centre (not the speedway, the the car parks) The thousands of youth that use TECT Arena for their netball, etc, are subsidized by ratepayers, as are users of Baywave, rugby grounds, Art Gallery, library and the like - unlike a cup water which is 100% users pays if you are a ratepayer. We've got our priorities right!
