LIVE: Six new COVID-19 cases, one new death

UPDATE: Six new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the past 24 hours in New Zealand, with one more death confirmed.

Three cases are connected to overseas travel and three are connected to excisting clusters.

Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield says today's additional death is a woman in her 80s.

"She was a Rosewood resident who had been transferred to Burwood Hospital.

"She had underlying medical conditions."

Ashley says everyone we lose to COVID-19 is a tragedy.

The death toll for COVID-19 in New Zealand is now at 14.

Ashley says 11 people are in hospital, two of those are in ICU. The patients are in a stable condition.

A record number of tests were carried out yesterday, with 5289 tests, bringing the total number of tests to 94,467.

A total of 1036 people have recovered from the coronavirus.

What we know so far

On Tuesday, there were only five new cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand, but the Director-General of Health reported an additional death.

Ashley Bloomfield says a woman in her 70s who had COVID-19 died on Monday.

She had been transferred to Waitakere Hospital on April 17.

"She had an underlying medical condition and our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time."

Tuesday's five new cases were made up of two confirmed cases and three probable.

Ashley says these cases are linked to other confirmed cases.

"There were 12 people in hospital. Three are in ICU and I am, happy to report that none are in a critical condition."

There were still 16 significant clusters.

Ashley says there is now a total of 1006 people who have recovered from the virus - up 32 from Monday.

New Zealand total number of COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday is now at 1445.

sorry to hear about another death. but this woman had serious underlying health problems. fail to see how this can be blamed on the virus. also why don't they post the actual number of people that test positive separate from probable cases instead of lumping them all in together. makes it seem a lot worse than it actually is

If you go to get a test done because the boss says i need to know you are negative as i don't know you and I'm protecting my other staff, or I am moving boarding house and the other occupants need to know i am negative. FORGET IT you will be refused a test.
