A stretch of Maunganui Rd from Hull Rd to Hinau St is undergoing major construction work.
Improvements started in 2017 between Tawa St and Sutherland Rd, followed by a three metre shared footpath/cycleway along Blake Park in 2019.
Angle parking with more than 160 additional parking spaces at Blake Park and the Mount Action Centre and a new Blake Park/Bay Oval entrance and footpath link are all new additions.
Tauranga City Council director of transport Brendan Bisley says there has been a lot of complaints over the last few years about traffic speed, traffic volume and heavy traffic vehicles.
'It's a super wide corridor connecting Hewletts into the Mount.”
But around Blake Park people often park on one side of Maunganui Rd, before crossing over to the other side, dodging cars that are often exceeding the speed limit.
Changes to Maunganui Rd will maintain its function of moving traffic, but will also cater to other needs, including pedestrian crossing facilities, says Brendan.
'For the kids that are going to play sport we need better, safer cycleways. The shared path on one side is all about an off-road cycleway for the less confident cyclists in that really busy traffic.”
The solid median in the centre of the road with tree planting has two design outcomes.
'As a pedestrian you only have to cross to half-way and then wait for a gap on the other side whereas at the moment everyone is just trying to run the gauntlet of trying to pick a gap in both directions and just going for it with no safety zone in the middle.”
There's also enhancement and tree planting in the green central strip, while also providing space for stormwater storage and disposal in the future.
'We can put in storage tanks to allow stormwater to slowly dissipate away. By putting some trees there, you also get a vertical nature, the street feels slightly more enclosed and vehicle speeds go down.
'That's part of the reason roundabouts are going in. As a motorist you don't have just a straight run through. You have to slow to navigate those roundabouts so you moderate your speed as you go rather than using Maunganui Rd as a bit of a race track.”
Local residents living in the side streets have also complained about being unable to get in and out of their street.
'The roundabouts balance that a little bit. And they're more environmentally friendly than putting in traffic signals.”
The new roundabouts have been introduced at Clyde St and Tay St.
'Doing what we're doing is hopefully creating a safe environment so that all modes – that's walking, cycling and motorists – can use it safely.”
Construction is expected to be completed by June 2021 with similar changes to Maunganui Rd, in the stretch down to Golf Rd to be completed by 2024.

Especially the traffic island. I cannot believe council destroying what was a very flexible arrangement. The median painted lines allowed cars to navigate around obstacles and for people to use them as island's at the same time. This is an absolute disaster , we need to defund council so they stop destroying the roads.
When is someone accountable

How is it that someone or group can, screw up the traffic in the city. If they do anything it’s a disaster yet they keep their jobs and keep on doing the same ?? When are we going to hold people accountable. Tax payer etc must get together as council is a sham presently
Love a pedestrian crossing Pyes Pa

Love one to connect to pedestrian entrance of Pyes Pa shops. Dodging traffic at 60 kph plus in all weather and light. Still ignored by council traffic, waste of time talking to council never any reply apart from we have received your letter ...then NADA nothing zilch

Are these the same "Experts" responsible for engineering the unbelievable "improvements" that forced the Greerton shambolic stuff-up on us ?? At a good slice of our rates, and months and months of snail pace gridlocked construction !!
Greerton

Sounds very similar to some of the PR about Greerton , safety, pedestrian, cycleways, garden etc ...and what is universally panned as a failure and cause of lines of traffic and long delays any time of the day and of course worse a certain times. Never heard anyone ever say it's better.
What a load of spin

Please don’t waste any more of our rates on doing more further down Maunganui Rd. Walked past the old Phoenix car park yesterday. Only people using it was about 8 kids on skateboards. Bet they are pleased. Just a joke of a “green space”.
another waste of money

The cross hatched zone in the middle of Maunganui Rd has been used safely by thousands as a midstop when crossing to Blake Park. The stupid raised grassed island is now dangerous for families with prams pushchairs, etc and the elderly that now have to step up and down a kerb. Another case of why change it if it isn’t broken. Doing the same idiot island idea soon outside Mount College I fear. Brendon stop looking at a computer and go see how the roads actually work for the people using them before you start wrecking them.
Same old same old

This council, controlled by its staff, continue to not listen to its Shareholders (the ratepayers). This so called safety improvement, needs to be tested before extending all the way to Golf road. Currently this section if road rolls smoothly. Hows the Port Traffic going to be effected. B trains negotiating the tight roundabouts. Totally brainless twits..
Emergency Responders
Posted on 12-12-2020 17:18 | By well now
Today I watched a fire engine using the painted median by Mount College during peak traffic, where are they to go once that has gone? Can't drive along the hard median and cars will not be able to move aside into the car parks. All emergency services use that painted median. Why isn't the cycle lane going down the railway reserve side of Maunganui road with a couple of overpasses to the college leaving the road undisturbed then the current cycle lanes can become bus lanes. Seems logical to me.
Not one qualified person exists in Council

I did an Official Information Act request to Council as to what qualifications their traffic staff (and their boss) has. I was turned down, they (illegally) refused to answer. So I did my own checking. There is not one person on their traffic engineering team that is a qualified traffic engineer. Their results speak for themselves.
TWO OUTCOMES !!

" The solid median in the centre of the road with tree planting has two design outcomes. " YES, blocking traffic movement AND increased road accidents (and possibly deaths) from vehicles running into the trees (for whatever reason).
Great work

Its great to see that traffic through this busy section of road will be slowed down and there being pedestrian crossing options. As a parent with young kids, trying to cross over to Blake Park has always been worrying and drivers do not give a damn about pedestrians, there are times I’ve stood in the middle of the road while my kids cross to slow traffic down. It’s a short section of road and if you’re honestly concerned that it will lead to traffic congestion (yeah right), I have no sympathy for you.

Open up the roads, get people moving. They are killing Mount Maunganui and the rest of the Bay.
OFFICE WORKERS AGAIN!

The trouble with people in TCC is they sit behind a desk make decisions from their computer, may have a quick glance at site and activate. Hold on they start and realise time of the year and we are stuck with road hold ups at the busiest time of the year. Time for Elected Members or Commissioner to rein them in.

The only faith I have in council is what they have earned. None. @ Stonefish. That's fine. You have to live with what will happen there more than I. I wish you luck. You'll need it based on all our previous experiences.
Options are less

Stonefish is incorrect there are no new pedestrian crossings ,there are 3 small breaks in the long grassed island where the tall orange refuge stick originally were. So it is no longer a simple cross half wait for traffic and go the rest of the way. These breaks are probably too small for a person with a child in a pushchair and other children to stand with said children next to them.
