Papamoa residents are being told not to panic if they hear tsunami sirens this morning.
Technology company Kordia will be testing two tsunami warning sirens in Papamoa from 9am and 12pm today.
Tsunami Survive Cluster group member Howard Severinsen says the siren will sound different to other emergency sirens and will be followed by a verbal message.
Sound levels may reach up to 115 decibels for residents close to the sirens, which are located at the intersection of Palm Beach Boulevard and Sovereign Drive and on Papamoa Beach Road by Alexander Place.
Tauranga City Council communications manager Elizabeth Hughes says emergency services including police, fire and civil defence will be on hand to assist on the day if need be.
If you wish to provide feedback on the sirens you can visit www.tauranga.govt.nz.

What if the very moment the test is due, a real tsunami warning needs to be issued, eh?

Good point. But I am sure that someone will have written into the plan that "no tsunamis are allowed during this time!"
