LIVE: Covid-19 death at Middlemore Hospital

UPDATE: One person has died from Covid-19 in Middlemore Hospital.

Director of Public Health Dr Caroline McElnay has confirmed the death while delivering the latest details of the outbreak in NZ live in Wellington today.

She says more details of the person's death will be released as soon as possible.

There are a total of 39 new community cases being reported today.

McElnay says 30 are in Auckland and nine are in Waikato.

"The total number in Waikato is now 18."

Two cases have also been identified in recent returnees.

Thirty-three people are now in hospital with the virus. Seven are in ICU or HDU.

"All of the cases are linked to known cases," says McElnay.

EARLIER:

Covid Response Minister Chris Hipkins and Director of Public Health Dr Caroline McElnay will update the media today at 1pm.

The pair are expected to be live from Wellington.

They are expected to give the latest information on the current Covid-19 outbreak in New Zealand.

Earlier today, it was confirmed that there was a positive case on Kawhia and Waikato Hospital staff had been stood down following a positive case visiting the ED.
