The Stoney Creek 2022 One Base Fishing Competition in Tauranga is providing a platform for massive achievements.

Angler David ‘Macca' Mcintyre, onboard the boat Floki, achieved his grand slam with the broadbill swordfish that weighed in at 112.2 kilograms.

'It took about 48 minutes to bring it up,” says David.

According to the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council, a grand slam achievement is a supreme award for a life time of angling.

It requires an angler to catch one type of each type of specified fish and meet the minimum weight requirements.

'This achievement means a lot to me.

'I've been chasing this one for a few years now, my mate caught one previously but this one is mine and I'm pretty stoked about it.”

David's grand slam achievement involves the following fish:

-Striped Marlin – 100kg

-Blue Marlin – 150kg

-Black Marlin – 150kg

-Broadbill – 100kg

-Spearfish – 10kg

The 2022 Stoney Creek One Base Fishing Competition started with a shotgun start on Wednesday morning.

Being hosted at the Tauranga Sports Fishing Club, the event is a four day hunt for the prizewinning fish.

This year, the tournament is helping fundraise the Tauranga Harbour and Ocean Clean Up Project.

This project is being hosted in conjunction with the Tauranga Sports Fishing Club, and will be funded by the Stoney Creek One Base Fishing Competition, along with local businesses, families and key sponsors.

The purpose of this project is to help clean up our own backyard.

This breaks my heart.

It's not a "great achievement" to torture and kill a living, sentient being. It's sad and tragic. I wonder what is missing from some people's lives, where they find amusement in the suffering of others.
