Tauranga's unelected Commissioners have asked the Government to delay local elections for another year. This is a democratic outrage. Already, New Zealanders have seen Wellington-appointed Commissioners make sweeping decisions on Tauranga council rates and spending with no accountability to local ratepayers and residents.
The dissolution of the elected council was always meant to be a temporary emergency measure with full local democracy restored in 2022.
And Commissioners have told Minister Nanaia Mahuta that they want to hold onto power for even longer.
This is yet another outrage and attack against the liberal democracy which existed in New Zealand prior to the takeover of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's dictatorial socialism. It needs to be resolved for the good of all New Zealanders and New Zealand itself. Before it is too late.
W Booth, Hamilton.
