Millions of dollars have been spent by Waka Kotahi NZTA on safety features on State Highway 2 between Tauranga and Waihi. Currently, there are five different speed limits on this stretch of road. There is now a major road campaign all in the name of ‘safety', which has reduced much of the journey to just 80km/hr. That was the speed limit set back in 1948. Vehicles and roads have improved greatly in the last 74 years. However, this Government's obsession with safety is depriving us of using our common sense whilst driving. If NZTA can't provide 100km/hr roads, a new Highways Department should take over.
