Undemocratic decisions – yet we foot the bill!

It is interesting that our Commissioners are considering selling the city's parking buildings and also seem hell-bent on selling our water infrastructure as advocated by Local government Minister Mahuta, who appointed them. Is this the way they propose to finance the $300 million proposal for downtown Tauranga? Sell key and vital infrastructure and replace it by nice to haves?

Back to the parking buildings. One reason given is that they have losses of some $2 million in the 2021 financial year. Why? Because the council deemed it appropriate to give us all two hours free parking to help the struggling downtown businesses. Council can reverse that decision anytime it so wishes. Isn't that a very good reason for keeping our valuable parking buildings? They do not look particularly flash but just like water and stormwater they have a vital part to play in our city's wellbeing.

Bill, you are so right. Selling the car parking buildings would be the beginning of the total demise of the CBD.I would hate to see the price they will get for them being a sunset business based on the push to get everybody out of their cars onto buses, scooters, cycles . Look at their last sale as published in the paper yesterday. 7 elder housing villages with a 2015 valuation of $26.77million (TCC websight) with an average increase over the last 10 years being +10.83% for Tauranga giving the value today at $41million. They sell that to the old Housing Corporation for $17.2million.What a deal, someone must be having trouble sleeping at night.

Sorry, but don't worry
