Showing bias!

Re: ‘Council eyes diverse future', page 4, (The Weekend Sun, May 13).

I am writing about the articles in local papers recently, which I think demand comment. I would like to know how councillors feel about ratepayers money being spent promoting what I see as racist remarks by Western Bay of Plenty District Council CEO John Holyoake, which in my opinion show bias! He should be politically neutral. We do not need divisive theories or opinions that are divisive, and not born out by facts.

If council was run like a good outside corporation, directors (councillors) could have at most three or four days of meetings a month, in which case you would attract a wider group of people!

Most cannot afford to stand for a small council.

I know from my own experience, from years ago, if working as a contractor or similar, being a local councillor can lose you thousands of dollars a year. You need to be totally committed to do it.

In the meantime, I believe the WBOPDC CEO's comments are totally inappropriate, and I expect better! I hope current councillors, or potential new ones, see it that way, it is only common sense!

My aim is one country, one people of all denominations, and one law for all. That is the only concept that will survive, and the only one I will support!

Norm Mayo, Katikati.

Editor's note: The Weekend Sun last week asked Western Bay of Plenty District Council CEO John Holyoake and Western Bay of Plenty Mayor Garry Webber to reply to letters on this topic. They declined.

That needs to be asked is how do people like Hollyoake get into positions of power if they have a racial agenda? Favour one group of people over all others? then accuses everyone else of prejudice if they ask questions? bit like our race relations commissioner!
