Re: ‘What more evidence do you need?', by Helen Weston of Katikati, published June 10 under the ‘Letters tab' on Sunlive.co.nz
Helen claims that co-governance and partnership is a lie because Maori ceded sovereignty and this was reaffirmed at the Kohimarama Conference in 1860.
Ms Weston seems confused because co-governance is based on Article 2 of the Treaty of Waitangi, which guaranteed Maori Rangatiratanga, not Article 1 where Maori gave up sovereignty.
The Treaty of Waitangi has three articles 1) Sovereignty 2) Rangatiratanga and 3) Equal Political Rights. None of these articles cancels any of the others.
Ms Weston also seems to be confused about separatism. Partnership is two partners working together. Separatism is two partners not working together. Co-governance is partnership not separatism.

Dress it up, talk carefully around it, but, if you have 1 system for those that relate to being Maori and another for the rest of NZ it is separatism, fact! what people like Peter Dey fail to explain along with these separatist policies like the Maori health authority Maori also want a say in 'our' system as well as running their own, why??
